🎈 Why the Hot Air Balloons Could Not Fly Today
We know many of you came out excited to see the balloons take to the skies, and we completely understand the disappointment when weather conditions prevent a launch. Safety is always our number one priority, and today’s higher winds made flying unsafe for both pilots and passengers.
While the winds were too strong for flights earlier in the evening, conditions improved enough later on for a handful of balloons to set up for a static glow. We were also able to safely offer our tethered rides, giving many guests the opportunity to enjoy the balloons despite the challenging weather.
A hot air balloon is very different from an airplane. Balloons travel with the wind and have very limited ability to steer. While a balloon may look large and powerful, it is actually quite vulnerable to strong surface winds, especially during takeoff and landing.
When winds are too strong: • Balloons can be difficult to control while inflating. • The basket can be dragged across the ground before liftoff. • Takeoffs can become unstable and dangerous. • Landings can be rough, causing the basket to tip, bounce, or drag. • Strong winds can carry balloons into areas that are unsafe for landing.
Most balloon flights require calm, predictable wind conditions to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience. Even if the weather seems pleasant on the ground, trained pilots carefully monitor wind speeds and conditions at multiple altitudes before making the decision to fly.
We share your disappointment because our pilots and crews love flying just as much as you love watching. However, no show is worth risking the safety of passengers, crew members, volunteers, or spectators.
Thank you for your understanding, patience, and support. We hope you'll join us tomorrow and hopefully conditions improve and we can safely fill the sky with beautiful balloons. 🎈❤️
