When Cisneros & Clavio were leased out for a summer 2024 packing trip, the job description was simple: carry gear through the mountains.
After an encounter with a Great Pyrenees guarding a sheep herd, the boys took an unplanned sabbatical and eventually settled into a defensible perch on the west ridge of Wetterhorn Basin, well above guard dogs, bears, and mountain lions.
And honestly? They seemed pretty content.
Big views. Quiet days. Plenty of time to explore the Southwest Colorado mountains like seasoned adventurers.
Pic 1–2: Early sightings of the runaway explorers.
Pic 3: Zoom in… yep, that’s them way up on the ridge living their best lives.
But as fall colors faded and early snows arrived, the easier life at lower elevations started calling. Cisneros wandered into a ranch pasture, and Clavio surprised a hunter who suddenly had an unexpected companion.
Thanks to a network of backcountry folks who kept an eye on them during their three-month adventure, both boys made it safely home to their familiar foothill pasture at Buckhorn Llama Co. just in time for winter.
Final pic: After taking in the views, the boys decided it was time to clock out and come home.
