Pryor Mountain Wild Mustang Center

Pryor Mountain Wild Mustang Center The Mustang Center is dedicated to preserving and interpreting the Pryor Mountain mustangs. Your donations will help us in this work! Rev.

The Pryor Mountain Wild Mustang Center has a long history that has worked towards preserving the wild horses in the neighboring Pryor Mountains. The Mustang Center is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. The Pryor Mountain Wild Mustang Center was incorporated in 1998 by Reverend Floyd Schwieger and John T. Nickle with initial donations of $300 each. John Nickle served as President and appointed Rev

. Schwieger, Richard Doerr, Jim Edwards, Daphne Hartman, and Phillip Schaeling as the original board. Not long afterwards Hope Ryden, Bill Roberts, Wes Meeker, and Dr. Phillip Sponenberg were added. These were later joined by Cal S. Taggart, Todd Wacaser, Jim Minchow, Kathy Johnsey, LaMoine Sorenson, and Nancy Cerroni. Schwieger, Richard Doerr, and Cal Taggart are now deceased and Wes Meeker and Phillip Schaeling no longer serve on the board. Today's Center evolved from the Pryor Mountain Wild Horse Association, a loosely knit group who were supportive of the Pryor horses. Some members of the Association dated back to the local area committee that worked to save the wild horses in the mid 1960's. Some of the members of the committee who remained active through the years were Bob Doerr, Wes Meeker, Rev. Schwieger, Emil Doerr, and Phyllis Hill, along with the Lovell Chamber of Commerce and the Town of Lovell. John Nickle supported the committee as Town Manager of Lovell. They all worked to help Lloyd and Royce Tillett and their families in their battle with the BLM to save the herd of wild horses in the Pryor Mountains. Hope Ryden, then a roving reporter with ABC TV, aided the cause by airing a report on national TV that brought nationwide attention to the plight of the Pryor horses. Finally in 1968, Secretary Stewart Udall established the Pryor Mountain Wild Horse Range in Montana and Wyoming. This became the first public Wild Horse Range in America. Clyde Reynolds, then Mayor of Lovell, was named to the first Wild Horse National Advisory Board, which convened their first meeting in Lovell. Schwieger liked to say, "come to Lovell to see the first horses on the first wild horse range". In the early 1990's Dale and Daphne Hartman became interested in the Pryor horses. They began adopting and breeding Pryor horses and along with Rev. Schwieger, they founded The Pryor Mountain Mustang Breeders Association. Today the Breeder Association has a large group of registered Pryor horses. One of the purposes of the Association is to have horses with the Pryor bloodline that could be reintroduced to the range if there were a huge loss of Pryor wild horses in the future. The Pryor Mountain Wild Mustang Center now serves as a permanent advocate group for the Pryor horses. This was the dream of Rev. Schwieger and remains the dream of John Nickle and the Board of Directors. Please join us in supporting the Pryor horses.

Drama on the Snow
Just the other day you were able to see Mica/MatoSka's band running to water being pursued by the bachelor stallion, Oracle. Yesterday was an exciting moment for this band as they came charging to the comfort of the snowfield at Mystic Pond. Their run to the snow was made even more dramatic by the challenge of not just one, but three bachelor stallions: Oracle, Horizon, and Galaxy. Mica certainly has his work cut out for him with the onslaught of some determined stallions. Follow the action through the photos and captions!

Mica's band heads to water!
A beautiful site to watch Mica/MatoSka and his band of blue towns plus one bay running to water. They are being followed by the persistent, Oracle who has taken on a role of satellite stallion to Mica.

This Morning...
On his way up the mountain today Steve came across the stallion, Tex, and mare, Sophia...and their new foal. It is a c**t and a perfect name seems to be Autry. Tex Ritter and Gene Autry were both a part of the "singing cowboy" genre of the 1930s and 1940s. Well...we have made a change in the name. While it is uncommon to change a horses' name, in the past it was done at times. While the name, Autry is a good one, another name was suggested that seems to fit even better....Antonio. This follows both the actor theme (Antonio Banderas) and also....goes well with Tex (San Antonio).

A Morning with Parry's Band: This is a continuation of my Sunday morning on the Pryor Mountain Wild Horse Range. After watching Tawa's band, I caught sight of another group of horses...Parry's Band. I was able to get a couple short, choppy videos of the band with a new foal!

A Morning with Tawa's Band: Sunday was an exciting day in Bighorn Canyon National Recreation Area. From the vantage point of my vehicle, I was able to spend a quiet morning watching the behaviors and interactions of Tawa's band...including two 2026 foals.

First Foals of 2026!
I know many have been waiting to meet the first Pryor foals of 2026. Well, this past week, four foals were discovered. We have put together a short video made of photos and clips from friends and our trail cams. So...while the quality of all isn't great...you can take a look at the foals right along with us. At this point we are just taking some time to learn more about the foals and figure out names for them. You can watch for updates on the Foal page of our Mustang Center webpage.

Beautiful Blue...Voyager
There are a number of beautiful blue roan stallions in the Pryors. Voyager is the five-year old son of the blue roan mare, Silver Bow. Since becoming a bachelor, he has maintained an elusive lifestyle. What a great surprise to receive these recent photos of Voyager from Wayne McClane from Montana. Wayne is very generous at sharing his discoveries, such as this sighting of Voyager, with us!
