Central Virginia Woodworkers Guild

Central Virginia Woodworkers Guild Welcome to the Central VA Woodworkers Guild page. The mission of the guild is to create a fellowship and forum for novices and seasoned tradesmen alike.

Our Guild was founded in January of 1998 by a handful of local woodworkers with a sincere desire to promote interest and competence in the fine and ancient art of woodworking. Through the sharing of ideas, techniques, inspiration and energies, we seek to improve our understanding and abilities, and promote an appreciation of the craft in our community. Our Guild is open to all members of the commu

nity, regardless of age, gender, woodworking experience, special interest, or amateur or professional status. We are bound together by our appreciation of quality handwork and the desire to refine our skills. Our Guild newsletter, the "Knothead News", will be sent free of charge to interested persons for three consecutive issues. They are invited to attend our every-other-month meeting, and may do so twice without obligation. This should be ample opportunity for a person to judge their compatibility with the goals and temperament of the Guild. Annual dues for the Guild are $12. Presently the dues are used to maintain and enlarge our woodworking video library, and pay for door prizes at our meetings. On occasion, it pays for guest speakers and Guild sponsored activities. Guild meetings are usually held on the second Thursday of all odd numbered months, usually at 7:30 pm. Occasionally, the meeting will be in the form of a field trip and held on the Saturday or Sunday following that Thursday. Various members host the meetings in their shops and homes on a voluntary basis. The host chooses the focus subject of the meeting and presents a demonstration, usually lasting about an hour. The host need not be an expert on the focus subject, and group participation is encouraged. Past meetings are highly varied in subject matter and have included hand cutting dovetail joints, steam bending, carving ball and claw feet, furniture design, stock preparation, building a wood strip canoe, woodworking machine and motor maintenance, sharpening, finishing techniques, tool swap meets, touring small commercial shops and lumber mills, to name but a few. The Central Virginia Woodworkers Guild is a member driven organization. Its success is entirely dependent on the active interest, enthusiasm, and energies of its membership. Presently, we have approximately 50 members.

Thanks to all who came out last Thursday to our December meeting to listen to the amazingly talented Craig Thibodeau. Author, craftsman, contributor to numerous woodworking magazines, Craig gave us a quick walkthrough of his portfolio and current works (see here to be amazed https://www.youtube.com/) , answering all questions along the way. Every day I'm humbled by the talent in our community, both regionally and within the craft (see for example the guitar below!). Thanks especially to Randy (Hill City Hardwoods) as usual for hosting us at his shop and, of course, to Craig (CT Fine Furniture by Craig Thibodeau) for sharing his time with us.

Now, get back to those holiday presents in your woodshop!

Great day to attend the James River Bateau Festival! All these bateau’s are headed on a 7 day trip to Richmond, just like in the 1800s when boats just like these to carry to***co and other products east for export. The Guild got to see one under construction a few months ago - good luck Robert!

Thanks to all who came out for our June meeting last Thursday at Hill City Hardwoodshardwoods. Especially thanks to Chris and JW from the Richmond Rockler Woodworking and Hardwareodworking store who made the drive down to Lynchburg to talk to us about the use of epoxy in woodworking. Lots of great information about the use of epoxy for charcuterie boards, "river' tables, bar tops, etc. They talked about using the right epoxy for the job, how to prep the jigs and how to finish the final product. Was a great night with a big crowd. Thanks JW and Chris!

Much thanks to Robert Schumacher for hosting us last night at his shop in Monroe. Robert is building a batteau for the annual James River Batteau Festival (https://www.vacanals.org/batteau). This boat will one of a fleet making the trip from Lynchburg to Maiden's Landing up near Richmond along the James River. Robert's batteau replicates the design of the originals from the 18th century - think lots of long heavy white oak boards and sealed with oakum. Robert walked us through he construction of the batteau as well as how this huge boat gets transported to the river.

Also present was Rob Campbell from the James River Association (https://thejamesriver.org) to talk about the history of batteau's on the James. In addition to being an expert on the history of James river navigation, he runs trips on a batteau from Lynchburg through James River Adventures (https://www.jamesriveradventures.org). Great evening - thanks Robert and Rob.

Great meeting last week! Many of our guild members have been busy. See some of the great projects folks have been working on. Also, an impromptu lesson on antique window refurb and glazing! Thanks to for letting us use their shop again.

Apologies for the late notice - the first Guild meeting of 2024 will be held this Thursday, February 15th at Hill City Hardwoods in Lynchburg (1208 Thurman Ave, Lynchburg, VA 24501). We will start at 730 PM. I am still gathering hosts for this year so we don't have a host for February so please bring any recently completed projects and we can have a "show and tell" event.

Also, as this is the first meeting of the year, please bring dues for the year - as usual, they remain $10 for the year. I'll have a notepad there to capture any changes in email and to identify that your dues are paid.

Looking forward to seeing everyone Thursday!

Happy New year to all! Didn’t make it for Christmas but finished up the bed. One coat of boiled linseed oil followed but three coats of teak oil, sanding in between to 320. Added a coat of wax to top it off. In the second picture, it’s next to a white oak dresser completed a few years ago. Happy with the final look with the other furniture in the room. Teenager slept in it last night and it made it through!

So many slats. Started with several wide poplar boards to cut down, joint and plane, and final saw to width. Added a ledge to the bed rail for the slats to sit on. Each slat gets a pin to center and keep in place while the mattress sits on top. Complete bed, ready for last sanding and finish.

Holiday weekend progress. Headboard joinery and fit up complete, making sure all the joinery closes. Really could use some longer clamps to pull the headboard and footboard together but ratchet start straps will work. Next up, mortising the legs and rails for the assembly hardware.
