Our final day…
Our group left Thessaloniki in the morning and headed back to Athens. Everyone enjoyed a lunch stop along the Aegean seaside! Delicious seafood and a splash in the sea were additions to the itinerary!
The evening was spent dining in the center of Athens, sharing one more meal together and saying goodbyes to the new friends we made this past week.

Berea, Thessoloniki and Phillipi: We spent some time on the bus the past couple of days enjoying the beauty of the countryside as we moved from one location to another. These three cities were important ones in Paul's personal story and in his telling of the story as we read it in Acts 16. We stood (or sat) on the very steps Paul preached from. We marveled at place along the Zygaktis river where Paul led Lydia to the Lord and baptized her. We peered into the "prison" that Paul and Silas were in before Paul ministered to the jailer. And finally, we trod upon the same road that Paul did as he came into Philippi. Today we were reminded that God empowered Paul to be on mission...along a river, on a bema or platform, along a roadside or even from a prison cell!

Meteora is a very unique UNESCO site with several monasteries perched high upon rook formations. We were privileged to visit two of them. One was a convent with nuns and the other was a monastery with monks. Both of these communities left an impression on us relative to their commitment to spend hours each day to seek God and be in relationship with him. And also to live more isolated and away from many of the worldly things that attract us and keep us from focusing on God.

Mykonos, Crete, Patmos and Santorini were the Greek islands that we visited the past few days. We enjoyed experiencing the culture and the people in this area. Each island had it's own personality. Now that we have access to internet, we'll add some more photos of our time on the islands.

Mykonos was a favorite of the group...we meandered in the streets along cobblestone walkways and bustling shops and eateries. As you can see, we arrived to a beautiful setting to watch the sunset!

Paul was exiled to the island of Patmos. Here we visited the cave where some believe that Paul stayed and wrote the book of Revelation. We were not able to take photos inside so are including one of the entrance.

We spent a couple of hours in Crete on a quiet Sunday morning wandering in the downtown and doing life as the locals would...stopping at a cafe for a coffee and delicious Greek pastry!

Our final stop was on the island of Santorini...the one that most often brings a photo of white washed homes with blue domes built into the hillside above the sea. This is a very unique island in that the towns are built high on the tops of this volcanic rock. We did a lot of walking up and down during our stay...and bumped into people along our way because this IS a popular destination!

The internet was not available as we sailed around the Greek Islands so we've got some catching up to do!

We sailed to Turkey to see the ancient ruins in Ephesus. Paul stayed here for several years. His sharing of the gospel to the people in the area allowed the Gospel to spread into Asia Minor..

Our first stop was to visit the home of Mary,. Some believe that this mountain top location allowed the Apostle John to care for her as he promised, and offered her a more peaceful life away from the controversies in the area regarding her son Jesus. Today millions of people come from all over the world each year to pay their respects to the Virgin Mary. There was a wailing wall where people could leave prayer requests and a spring that offered holy water. See the photos below.

The highlight of today was in ancient Ephesus. Most of us were wowed by the size of the area that had been excavated and how much excavation is still being done! The photos should give you a glimpse into the structures remaining, but not the stories surrounding them. Fascinating! Guests on this tour would be happy to share what they learned here!

We left Athens this morning for a 3-day cruise to some of the Greek Islands and a stop in Ephesus. First stop was the stunning island of Mykono! Internet is very difficult so the blog has not been started. We‘ll try and keep some pictures coming via Facebook

Acropolis...this was a challenge on a 95* day, but worth every step up! We rested for a bit afterwards, and then headed out to enjoy dinner with the locals in Athens where we were entertained by musicians (one played a Bouzouki) and dancing!

Corinth: we visited the canal which spans about 4 miles between the Gulf of Corinth and the Saronic Gulf. As you can see...

Corinth: we visited the canal which spans about 4 miles between the Gulf of Corinth and the Saronic Gulf. As you can see it's quote narrow and sets about 200 feet below the bridge we are standing on. We also visited the Ancient city of Corinth where we wandered around the ruins, were taught about life in Corinth at the time Paul lived there and were reminded of his messages about Jesus to the Corinthians.

Tulip Tours arrived in Athens today after really looonng flights, but thankfully all went well! Tomorrow we begin our tour that will follow the footsteps of Paul on some of his missionary journeys. Today we settled into our hotel, gathered as a group and ventured out for a little bit of adventure! Some were able to watch the changing of the guards at the Parliament building. The restaurant at our hotel has quite the view of the Acropolis which several of our group enjoyed before putting their weary bodies into bed. Check back in a couple days to see what we've been up to!
