John Oliver Place is the first and oldest cabin along the Cades Cove loop.

Here’s some interesting facts:

• John, Lucretia, and their young daughter, Mary “Polly,” arrived and began settling in Cades Cove in 1818.

• The Oliver’s were the first permanent European-American Settlers & according to Lucretia Oliver, the family survived their first winter only because of the generosity of the Cherokee who provided them with food.

• John Oliver was a War of 1812 veteran and collier (charcoal maker) by trade.

• Several generations of Oliver’s lived on the homestead until the park was established over a hundred years later. Several descendants, including Elijah Oliver, branched out and settled elsewhere in Cades Cove, tying this family to this fertile valley.

Pactola Reservoir Dam was construction began in 1952 & was completed in 1956. Nearly 200 men worked on the dam. Unskilled laborers earned $1.25 an hour and skilled laborers earned $2.75. The men placed 2,163,251 cubic yards of impervious earthfill and 2,156,742 cubic yards of rockfill for a total of 4,319,993 cubic yards of embankment fill. There were no accidental deaths in the four years of construction at Pactola, but numerous injuries resulted from the steep terrain and outeroppings of hard rock known as amphibolite.

Today, Pactola Dam provides excellent recreation opportunities for the public. Reclamation, the U.S. Forest Service and the South Dakota Department of Game Fish and Parks work together to provide the public with one of the best sites in the Black Hills.
U.S. Forest Service facilities adjacent to Pactola Reservoir include 2 campgrounds, 2 picinic areas, 4 hiking trails, 2 boat ramps, a swim beach, marina and visitor center.
