“Welcome home, my sista… welcome home!”
I’ve heard those words again and again during travels to Africa, and every time, they landed deeper in my soul. For me, that simple phrase carries the weight of generations and the reminder of my purposes. Each time I return, it feels like the continent has been waiting just for me. And the moment I step foot on its soil, I am embraced. Fully. Arms open wide.

Last night I returned to the States after a week-long visit to Senegal, and I am still carrying the magic of it with me. Sitting beneath the stars, listening to a live jazz performance, surrounded by warmth, rhythm, and deep connection. ALL of it reminded me once again why I keep returning back to Africa. The moment I arrived, I was embraced in ways that words can barely explain. I knew then that I had experienced something sacred. Something I wanted to share.

I have also traveled to Botswana South Africa, and The Gambia. Lifelong friendships have been formed, empathy deepened, worldviews shifted, and pride awakened.

I never knew what it meant to feel truly at home, or that I had been missing it my whole life, until I felt it in Africa. There is a spiritual grounding that happens, a reconnection with self and heritage, a healing. It is an experience every African American should have. Especially now. Especially in times like these, when political and cultural divisions in our country threaten to erase our sense of belonging and worth. Reconnecting with our roots is not just powerful, it is necessary!

✈️ Travel Tip from Afro Discoveries!

Hey Friends! As you prepare for your upcoming trips, we want to make sure you’re all set when it comes to ID requirements.

📌 REAL ID Reminder (U.S. Travelers):
Beginning May 7, 2025, all U.S. travelers flying domestically will need a REAL ID-compliant driver’s license or another acceptable form of ID (like a passport) to board a domestic flight.
Look for a star in the upper corner of your driver’s license to know if you have a REAL ID.

🛂 Don't forget your passport!
If you’re traveling internationally (like with Afro Discoveries), you’ll need a valid U.S. passport. Make sure yours is up to date and not expiring within 6 months of your return date.

🇬🇲 Day 7 Highlight: Cooking Domoda Like Locals!

What a day! We had a hands-on Gambian cooking experience, learning to make Domoda, a rich and flavorful peanut butter stew that’s a local favorite. 🍲

🛍️ First stop: the local market! Some of us shopped for ingredients, but here’s the twist—we learned and had to ask for each item in Mandinka! We had no clue what we were asking for until a vendor handed it over. Priceless and hilarious!
👩🏽‍🍳 At Mama Africa Art Residence & Art Center Gambia’s, we chopped, stirred, and laughed our way through the cooking process. Best part? Sitting down together to enjoy the delicious meal we created.

Cooking + culture = the perfect recipe for a great day!

🇬🇲 Night 6 Highlight with Afro Discoveries: A Warm Welcome from the Jola Tribe!
Our evening was nothing short of magical as we were welcomed to Mama Africa Art Residence & Art Center Gambia by the vibrant Jola tribe. 🎶
🪘The night was alive with dancing, drumming, and a cultural celebration that had us clapping, moving, and fully immersed in the rhythms of The Gambia.
🌟 The energy and joy were contagious, and some of us couldn’t resist joining in on the fun!

A beautiful way to connect with the heart of Gambian culture—unforgettable memories made under the stars.
