Aloha Friday, all! 🌺 Check out this glorious 360 panorama of Kaunaʻoa (Mauna Kea) Beach!

Mauna Kea Beach is a stunning white sand beach located on the Kohala Coast of the Big Island of Hawai’i. Its crystal-clear waters are perfect for swimming and snorkeling.

Note: That black blob in the water is actually a school of small mackerel called “Akule.” These fish gather in the tens of thousands, forming a tight bait ball to protect themselves from predators! 🐋🦈🦈🦈

Overlooking the beach is the Mauna Kea Hotel, built in 1965 by Laurance S. Rockefeller. It sits at the base of the dormant Mauna Kea volcano.

A 360 Panorama from the Kaiwa Ridge Trail (Lanikai Pillbox Hike), O‘ahu. 🌺

The views are glorious; you may be best off admiring them here. The last time we did this hike was at dawn, and it was a zoo up there, and it was some years ago.

The Lanikai Pillbox Hike on O‘ahu offers open views from its ridge above Kailua. The trail climbs to concrete bunkers overlooking Lanikai’s white sands and turquoise waters. Nā Mokulua islets sit offshore, with the Ko‘olau Mountains’ sharp green ridges rising inland. On clear days, the ocean stretches to a distant horizon, sometimes hinting at Moloka‘i.

A view from a Hanalei home. Hanalei Bay is in the distance. Clouds stacking up against the mountains, as it usually does in the afternoons.

Taken around sunset. Kauai, Hawaii.

We generally do not share photos that include homes, but here we are.

Not a shabby place to hang your hat at the end of the day. Can you picture living here?

Interactive 360-Degree View from Nā Mokulua, Kailua, O‘ahu, Hawai’i.

This 360-degree panorama captures Moku Nui, one of the twin islets known as Nā Mokulua, or "the two islands" in Hawaiian, off O‘ahu’s windward coast. Moku Iki, its smaller sibling, sits nearby, about 0.75 miles from Lanikai Beach. Part of the Hawaii State Seabird Sanctuary, these islets host nesting seabirds in ground burrows. Moku Iki and Moku Nui’s interior are off-limits to visitors, and pets are banned to protect the wildlife.

Local surfers ride breaks flanking Moku Nui, while spearfishers share the ocean-side drop-off with tiger sharks, drawn by deep waters teeming with fish. Kayak and outrigger canoe trips to Moku Nui are common, though regulations block tour drop-offs at Kailua or Lanikai beaches. These barren islets, with sparse vegetation and rugged rock faces, offer a raw escape for kayaking, snorkeling, or simply soaking in the quiet, far from O‘ahu’s bustle.

Interesting Tidbit: Moku Nui’s cliffs hide small sea caves, carved by relentless waves, where ancient Hawaiians once stored fishing gear, now only explored by daring kayakers at low tide.

The panorama reveals turquoise shallows, distant Lanikai’s white sands, and the Ko‘olau Mountains’ green ridges under a wide sky.

Have you visited this trail?

The Halema‘uma‘u Trail in Hawai‘i Volcanoes National Park is a 1.8-mile round-trip hike from the Kilauea Visitor Center, descending 425 feet through koa and fern rainforest to a lava field at Halema‘uma‘u Crater’s edge. The steep trail is partly paved with some rocky patches. The steaming crater view is open and stark. Solitude is common in quiet stretches, like other Big Island trails. No shade at the crater.

Current Volcano Activity: Kilauea’s eruption in Halema‘uma‘u Crater, ongoing since December 23, 2024, saw its 19th episode end May 2, 2025, after brief lava fountaining. Activity stays within the park, posing no threat to homes. Volcanic gas, Pele’s hair, and tephra are hazards. Check USGS for updates, as trails may close.

A forgotten beach in Waikoloa. We cannot remember the name.

On a windy day at a Kona coast beach near Kolea, strong gusts whip across the shore, stirring up coarse white coral sand. Waves pound the jagged lava outcrops, sending spray into the air. The wind rustles sparse naupaka bushes, and the ocean churns under a cloudless sky. The beach is empty.

Hawaii’s islands always have these quiet corners—whether on this Kona beach, an O‘ahu lookout, or a Maui trail—where solitude is easy to find.
