👀 AFTERMARKET TIRES BANNED IN CALIFORNIA?
California is considering a new proposal that could dramatically change the aftermarket tire market. The California Energy Commission’s proposed Replacement Tire Efficiency Program would require replacement tires sold in the state to meet strict rolling-resistance standards similar to the original equipment tires that come on new vehicles. The goal is to improve fuel economy, reduce emissions, and potentially save drivers money at the pump.
The controversy? Critics say many popular aftermarket and performance tires could be affected because grippier tires typically have higher rolling resistance. Some enthusiasts are worried the proposal could reduce tire choices for muscle cars, sports cars, track-day vehicles, and other performance applications. Others argue that lower rolling-resistance tires may wear out faster, potentially leading to more frequent tire replacements.
Before anyone panics, this is still a proposal and has not become law. There are also potential exemptions being discussed for certain low-volume tire models and specialty applications.
As a car enthusiast, this is one of those stories worth watching closely because what starts in California often finds its way into other states over time.
What do you think?
Should California prioritize fuel efficiency, or should drivers have the freedom to choose whatever tires they want for their vehicles? 🤔
