An updated notice was recently issued by the U.S. Embassy & Consulates in Mexico regarding security operations in certain regions of the country. I encourage you to rely on official sources and verified information rather than media headlines that can sometimes amplify fear.
It is also important to understand that the current unrest being reported is largely focused on Puerto Vallarta, located on Mexico’s Pacific Coast. Cabo San Lucas may look close on the map, but is separated by the Gulf of California, think 19+ hour drive time. Puerto Vallarta is some 1,500 miles from the resort regions of the Mexican Caribbean. The Mexican Caribbean includes Cancun, Riviera Maya, Playa del Carmen, and Tulum.
At this time, travel to Mexico’s primary Caribbean resort areas of Cancun, Isla Mujeres, Riviera Maya, and Cozumel continues as planned.
I am actively monitoring the situation and remain in contact with ALG Vacations for the most current guidance. Governor Mara Lezama of Quintana Roo has shared that the state continues coordinating with local and federal authorities to maintain safety and security throughout its tourist destinations, reinforcing their commitment to protecting both residents and visitors.
For perspective, I winter in Puerto Aventuras, about one hour from Cancun. I personally feel comfortable going about my daily routine and running errands. I always remain vigilant and aware of my surroundings just like I do at home.
Ultimately, you will need to decide what is best for you and your family. Please keep an eye on official government travel advisories. If you are considering postponing your trip, please verify if you have purchased the Cancel For Any Reason travel protection.
As always, I encourage situational awareness, remaining within established tourist areas, and reaching out with any questions prior to departure. Feel free to email me at [email protected] if you have travel concerns.
All the best,
Lori
