The Tatra National Park, located in the Tatra Mountains on the border between Poland and Slovakia, is home to some of the most stunning mountain lakes in Central Europe. These glacial lakes, known locally as "stawy" in Polish and "pleso" in Slovak, are formed by melting glaciers and nestled within dramatic alpine landscapes.
One of the most famous lakes in the park is Morskie Oko ("Eye of the Sea"), situated at an altitude of 1,395 meters. It's the largest and fourth-deepest lake in the Tatra Mountains, surrounded by towering peaks and accessible via a scenic hike that attracts thousands of visitors each year.
Another notable lake is Czarny Staw pod Rysami ("Black Pond beneath Rysy"), located at a higher altitude above Morskie Oko. This lake is known for its deep, dark waters and serves as a starting point for hikers aiming to reach the highest peak in Poland, Rysy.
These mountain lakes are renowned for their crystal-clear waters, which reflect the surrounding jagged peaks, creating breathtaking vistas that are popular among photographers, nature lovers, and adventurers. The pristine environment around these lakes is protected, making them a haven for rare alpine flora and fauna.
Visiting the lakes in the Tatra National Park offers not only a chance to witness the raw beauty of the mountains but also an opportunity to experience the serene and untouched wilderness that defines this unique region.
