Bridge Sprees with Gail and Jeff Bridge Camps and Bridge Cruises with Gail Greenberg and Jeff Hand

08/08/2025

In three days, our bridge camp begins. I am busy with my final preparations. This will be our first bridge camp that has a table of new beginners. I must be in my last half year before I am ready to send my series of new beginner lessons off to a printer. Every time that I teach it, I learn more about how students learn and what I can do to help them learn. I will be happy when that project is finished.

A story from an old bridge column by Fred Karpin: There is one thing that kibitzers at the bridge table are barred from doing! They are not allowed to ask or answer any questions during the bidding or the play. The awareness of this point of decorum can be observed in the following incident.
During the tournament one of the players noticed that their kibitzer had not moved, spoken or breathed for several minutes. They became concerned and wondered if they should shake him or perhaps see if there was a doctor around. They spoke fairly loudly but there was still no sign of life from the kibitzer.
"Wait" said North as he removed his cards from the hand that they had just played. What do you bid as dealer with this hand? he whispered to the kibitzer.
"Two spades replied the kibitzer after he had opened his eyes. "But is it okay for you to consult with me during the bidding"?
