With several tournaments coming up on Santee Cooper, there should be some good fishing ahead as we start making the transition into fall. But before everyone hits the water, there are a few things worth keeping in mind.
Lake levels are down a good bit right now, so use extra caution while navigating. Be especially cautious around the construction areas along I-95. While known channels and commonly traveled runs may be safe, always keep an eye out for surprises. Lower water levels can bring submerged hazards much closer to the surface than you’re used to seeing.
Stay in known water when possible, slow down anywhere you’re unsure, and don’t rely solely on previous GPS tracks or experience from when the lake was at a different level. Conditions can change, and every angler is responsible for navigating safely.
On the fishing side, we’re starting to see a more consistent cooling trend in water temperatures. Baitfish are moving, which should mean the bite continues to improve as we move further into fall. It should be an exciting few weeks of fishing on Santee Cooper.
