Coming to drive The Shawshank Trail this weekend? Make a weekend of it.

Start with being part of your favorite movie! 🎥

Pick a few of the 16 filming locations, follow the route at your own pace and leave yourself time to actually stand in the places you remember from The Shawshank Redemption.

Then add a little extra around the Trail:

👻 Blood Prison takes over the The Ohio State Reformatory after dark Friday.
🏁 Buckeye Brawl brings the action to Mansfield Speedway Friday night.
🍂 Saturday brings fall events around Richland County, including seasonal stops near Malabar Farm State Park and the Ohio Bird Sanctuary.

The Shawshank Trail was built for movie fans, so there’s no need to rush it.

Brooks walked through these doors with one suitcase and a world that had moved on without him.

The Bissman Building in downtown Mansfield became the Brewer Hotel in The Shawshank Redemption.

But here’s the part even some longtime fans miss:

Brooks’ hotel room wasn’t filmed inside this building. That room was staged at the The Ohio State Reformatory.

And the Bissman Building had another role too. It also became the Portland Daily Bugle.

One building. Two Shawshank locations.

Today, the Brewer Hotel entrance and Shawshank Trail marker are still here for fans following the filming sites.

You came for Shawshank history . Now there’s another story taking flight upstairs.

Most Shawshank fans know exactly why the Ohio State Reformatory is on their Mansfield itinerary.

The cellblocks. The Warden’s office. The tunnels. The places where Andy, Red, Brooks and the rest of the story came to life.

But this building keeps giving you reasons to explore a little farther.

Today, the Frank P. Lahm Aviation Museum officially opened on the third floor of the Reformatory, bringing Richland County’s remarkable aviation history into the same building that movie fans have been traveling to see for more than three decades.

Inside are the stories of local aviation pioneers, military pilots and innovators, along with uniforms, flight jackets, photographs, artifacts and memorabilia spanning generations.

And yes, that means your next trip to Shawshank can include a detour into Mansfield history you probably weren’t expecting.

You came for Shawshank. October gives you a few more reasons to stay.

A trip along The Shawshank Trail can already take you from the imposing cell blocks of the Ohio State Reformatory to the streets, buildings and countryside that became part of the film.

Come in October and Mansfield looks a little different.

The Reformatory transforms after dark for Blood Prison. More than 1,000 jack-o’-lanterns glow at Kingwood Center Gardens. Haunted stories lead you into the hills at Malabar Farm. Dracula takes the stage downtown. And there are fall events happening throughout Richland County that can easily turn a Trail trip into a full weekend.

So visit the filming sites.

Stand where Andy, Red and Brooks stood.

Then stick around and see what Mansfield does with October.

More time to journey through Shawshank.

As of October 1, the Ohio State Reformatory is now open 10 AM–4 PM, 7 days a week for historic tours, and for the first time, those daily hours will continue through the winter!

That gives you, Shawshank fans, a lot more flexibility when planning one of the Trail’s most recognizable filming stops.

🔒 Historic Tours: Daily, 10 AM–4 PM
🧩 Escape Rooms: Thursday–Monday, 11 AM–4 PM
❄️ Closed major holidays and Dec. 23–Jan. 1

The Reformatory is just one of 16 filming sites on The Shawshank Trail, so start where you want, take your time and build the route around your visit.

Doing The Shawshank Trail this fall? It’s Blood Prison Season 🩸

Blood Prison: Apocalypse opens tonight at the The Ohio State Reformatory

By day, you can still tour the Reformatory and see familiar Shawshank filming locations. Then after dark, Blood Prison takes over with an immersive haunted experience inside the historic prison.

This year there are several ways to do it, including faster-entry options, Touch Passes for guests who want a more interactive experience, and the Shanks & Spirits Lounge for select 21+ ticket holders.

Do you know where Brooks and Red both worked after leaving Shawshank?

Same green apron.
Same grocery store.
And one very memorable reminder:

“Make sure your man double bags.”

The scenes were filmed at what was then E&B Market in Mansfield. In the movie, it became Food-Way Grocery Store. Today, it’s Save A Lot - and still one of the 16 filming locations on The Shawshank Trail.

You’ll find Shawshank murals inside and outside.

The walls of the Ohio State Reformatory have plenty of stories to tell - and this weekend, the spooky season starts around Mansfield. 👻

This weekend brings the first wave of fall happenings with J&J Field of Screams opening in Shelby, CrowFest returning to the Mansfield Art Center, and A Cabinet of Curiosities already on display downtown at the Mansfield-Richland County Public Library Lexington Branch.

And that’s just the beginning. Blood Prison returns to the The Ohio State Reformatory next weekend, with more haunted attractions, performances and fall events following through October.
