Each calls for a different budget.

For a couple planning a private, roughly two-week journey through several Australian regions, $30,000–$50,000+ before international airfare is a useful starting point. An expedition cruise or a trip built around exceptional lodges needs its own calculation.

Having traveled through every Australian state and territory, I know how much the choices matter. Sometimes an extra night somewhere extraordinary adds more to your trip than another stop.

Travel insurance cannot guarantee the vacation you thought you bought.

That’s a conversation I’m having more often with clients considering European river cruises.

A few years ago, water levels were more likely to come up closer to departure. Today, they’re part of my planning conversation before we choose the cruise.

And it’s not just low water.

High water can prevent ships from clearing bridges. Prolonged heat and drought can affect river levels. And extreme summer temperatures can make days spent exploring European cities uncomfortable, particularly for an older river-cruise clientele.

So I’ve changed how I advise.

I rarely recommend peak summer river cruises anymore. When summer is the only option, I’m more selective about the river, ship and river cruise line.

Ship design matters. Fleet size and the ability to swap ships matter. So does a cruise line’s track record when conditions become uncertain.

I apply the same thinking to my own travel. I’m hosting a Rhine sailing this November, and even there, I’m hedging my bet. November isn’t risk-free - no month is - but I’m avoiding extreme summer heat and some of the risk associated with prolonged hot, dry periods.

I want clients to understand those tradeoffs before they book.

A disrupted river cruise doesn’t always mean a canceled cruise. It can mean a missed port, ship swap, bus transfer or altered itinerary.

And that’s where travel insurance is often misunderstood.

Insurance is important, but if the cruise still operates with changes, those changes don’t necessarily constitute a covered loss. Insurance can protect against specific covered events. It cannot guarantee the experience you imagined when you booked.

None of this makes me less enthusiastic about river cruising. It makes me more deliberate about recommending it.

The better question isn’t simply, “Is this a good river cruise?”

It’s: Is this the right river, on the right ship, with the right river cruise line, at the right time of year, for this traveler?

That’s a much better conversation to have before the deposit is paid than after the river decides to change the itinerary.

One of the most important questions I ask every client isn't, "Where do you want to go?" It's, "How do you want to feel when you get home?"

Because the answer shapes every decision that follows. It determines not only where you go, but how you experience it.

Two people can both say they want an African safari and end up with completely different journeys.

One dreams of watching elephants cross the Chobe River at sunset before returning to a tented camp under the stars.

Another wants to pair gorilla trekking through Rwanda's misty forests with a few days in South Africa, ending the journey with world-class food and w**e in Cape Town.

The destination is only the beginning. The real magic is designing a journey around what excites you.

Is China on your luxury travel radar yet? 🇨🇳

When people think of luxury travel in Asia, the conversation usually starts with Japan.

It should.

But after visiting China multiple times, including Beijing, Shanghai, and even spending a week in Xiamen, I have always been surprised by how rarely China enters that same conversation.

That is beginning to feel like a missed opportunity.

Imagine watching the sun set over the Great Wall before sitting down to a private candlelit dinner with ch*****ne, long after the crowds have gone home.

Or exploring the Forbidden City alongside a historian who brings centuries of imperial history to life in a way no guidebook ever could.

One of the things I find most fascinating about China is the contrast.

In a single journey, you can glide across the country on one of the world’s most advanced high-speed rail networks, stand beneath Shanghai’s futuristic skyline, then wake the next morning surrounded by misty mountains, centuries-old villages, and peaceful countryside.

The landscapes are just as remarkable.

Enjoy a private tea experience overlooking Hangzhou’s legendary Longjing tea fields. Cruise through Guilin’s dramatic limestone karsts aboard a private boat. Wander ancient water towns where life still moves at a slower pace despite the modern world just beyond the horizon.

China does not ask you to choose between history and innovation.

It gives you both, often on the same day.

It is not a destination I recommend to everyone.

But for travelers who want a journey that feels grand in every sense of the word: history, culture, cuisine, and luxury, China belongs on the shortlist.

And while Tokyo can be a beautiful addition, China is more than capable of being the journey itself.

Sometimes the most memorable destinations are the ones we never seriously considered.

Luxury travel isn't about spending more.

It's about spending more thoughtfully.

Over the years, I've noticed something interesting about many of my clients. The moments they talk about for years afterward are rarely the most expensive ones.

It's not the suite upgrade.

It's not the most extravagant resort.

Instead, it's standing in exactly the right place at exactly the right time. Watching the sunset over a mountain they've dreamed of seeing for years. The guide who brought history to life. The hidden place they never would have found on their own. The feeling of being completely immersed in a destination.

The true value of luxury travel isn't found in spending more money. It's found in creating moments that would have been impossible to experience any other way.

The role of a great travel advisor isn't simply to spend your budget.

It's to understand what creates meaning for you and design a journey around those moments.

That's the difference between an expensive trip and a memorable one.
