A historic sail-by: Boaters and onlookers along South Florida shorelines were awed by the passing Wednesday of the SS United States, a historic ocean liner widely known as “America’s Flagship.”

Longer and faster than the Titanic, the SS United States holds the transatlantic speed record for ocean liners. First launched over 70 years ago, the ship is being towed from Philadelphia, around the Florida peninsula, and into the Gulf, where she will be sunk off Okaloosa County in the Panhandle to become the world’s largest artificial reef.
