The Dome Houses of Cape Romano 🌊
Just off the southern tip of Marco Island once stood one of Southwest Florida’s most iconic and mysterious sights—the Dome Houses of Cape Romano.
Built in the early 1980s by oil producer Bob Lee, these futuristic structures were designed to be self-sustaining, hurricane-resistant, and completely off the grid. Back then, they sat safely on land, surrounded by palm trees and white sand.
But the Gulf had other plans.
Over the years, erosion slowly claimed the shoreline, and what was once beachfront property became surrounded by water. The domes stood strong through storms, hurricanes, and decades of change—until nature finally won.
What’s left is the story… a reminder of how powerful nature is, and how quickly it can reshape even the most ambitious dreams.
If you look out across the water where they once stood, it’s hard to imagine such a unique piece of history ever existed—but for those who saw them, it’s something you never forget.
