Still standing after 165 years, The Anchorage, reflects the faded glory in the oldest part of Marietta. The once-stately home has been known by many names throughout its existence: Putnam’s Folly, Elmwood, Putnam Villa, and finally The Anchorage. This photo of what we affectionately call the Music Room captures just a small piece of the elegance this mansion excudes.

But don't take our word for it, come check it out for yourself!

Anchorage Haunted History tour at 4pm on Saturday:

Happy World Book Day!

The definition of Book is "a written or printed work consisting of pages glued or sewn together along one side and bound in covers." But for many people around the world a book is way more than the definition. It's an escape. It's a fantasy. It's a world beyond our own. So be sure to set a side some time today for yourself to read an old favorite or a new adventure.

What's your favorite book? Let us know in the comments below.

Harmar village was once a place where many prominent families lived and worked. The Fearing family was just one of them. Their beautiful home was built in 1847, and the family's ties to the nation's history is one that is still talked about today. The home still stands and is available for tours, by contacting Washington County Historical Society

Exciting news! 📰

Ancient Earthworks is BACK & scheduled to kick off the 2025 season on May 17th!

We’ll visit flat-topped earthworks that bear an uncanny resemblance to Aztec temples; walk down a sacred road more than 20 centuries old; and stand atop the Quadranou Mound where ancient shamans studied the movement of the sun, moon and stars.

We’ll also explore enigmatic Mound Cemetery, the final resting place of Revolutionary War Patriots, and hear stories of ancient civilizations as we walk through the lovely Victorian neighborhood that surrounds the mounds.

This tour is a fantastic opportunity to step way back in time. Over 2000 years old, the earthworks in this area are an important key to Marietta’s past.

Ancient Earthworks departs from the Washington County Public Library at 615 Fifth Street.

The landscape certainly has changed from this photo. This was taken from around the Tiber Way area, facing the lots that once held Union Depot, that is now the Parking Partners Lot and Wesbanco.

We don’t just run a store, we create an experience. Our curiosity shop is a collection of the strange, the forgotten & the wonderfully weird.

From stacks of long forgotten family photos discovered in antique stores, to a skull discarded after years of teaching students, to hidden treasurers pulled from behind the walls of old Victorian homes in Marietta, we love giving oddities a place to belong.

Tell us, what’s your favorite part of the Hidden Marietta Curiosity Shop?

Our Story

We operate an array of history and ghost tours, both downtown walking tours and inside building tours. Our walking tour options include Harmar Ghost Trek, Putnam Street Ghost Trek, Ancient Earthworks, and Fires & Floods. If you want to explore a historic building we take you inside on the Anchorage Haunted History Tour and the Lafayette Hotel Haunted History tour. Each tour tells you the history and ghost stories associated with the building, and ends with a short investigation.

If you want to try something really different, we even take private groups into haunted locations for paranormal investigations!

For professional or amateur photographers, we even allow access for personal or professional photography! Take photos of the Anchorage itself, or bring your family, friends or clients in to do a photo shoot. We offer Antique Photography as well, so join us for a costumed photo or use the costumes in your own photos!
