All U.S. citizens whether in the United States or abroad are encouraged to enroll in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) at https://step.state.gov to receive the latest security alerts. You can also follow the “U.S. Department of State - Security Updates for U.S. Citizens” channel on WhatsApp for timely notifications.

Travel Update: since this has been posted, the United States government has issued an advisory to American tourists in certain popular Mexico destinations, including the Cancun area, the shelter in place out of caution due to the events in PVR.

It’s also important to note that the current area of unrest being reported is focused largely on Puerto Vallarta, which is located on Mexico’s Pacific Coast. If applying for or renewing your passport is on your to-do list, here’s why now is a great time to cross it off:
1️⃣ Processing times are low.
2️⃣ It’s never been easier to renew with Online Passport Renewal, just make sure you’re using the official site (start at travel.state.gov/renewonline).
3️⃣ A U.S. passport can be used to meet the Real ID requirement for domestic air travel.

Reminder: Starting February 1, if you don’t have a REAL ID or acceptable form of ID (like a passport!) for domestic flights, you may pay a $45 fee to verify your identity through TSA ConfirmID. A passport card ($30) or passport book are both accepted REAL ID alternatives for domestic air travel and can help you avoid this fee, but just remember that a passport card cannot be used for international air travel (you'll need a passport book for that). Learn more about the Real ID policy at TSA.gov/real-id and about passport cards at travel.state.gov/passportcard.
