After our first trip to Costa Rica 🇨🇷 in 2017, I’ve made my coffee like this every morning. It taste so good and love the history and tradition of the Costa Ricans. 💕🧐

The chorreador is one of those wonderfully simple Costa Rican inventions that tells you a whole lot about the country without saying a word. Long before fancy espresso machines, electric coffee makers, and coffee shops on every corner, Costa Rican families were brewing their morning coffee with a chorreador—a simple wooden stand holding a cloth filter, traditionally called a bolsa, into which freshly ground coffee was placed. Hot water was slowly poured over the grounds, and the coffee would “chorrear,” or drip, into a waiting pot or cup. Simple? Absolutely. But in Costa Rica, simple has a way of becoming special.

The history of the chorreador is closely tied to Costa Rica's coffee culture, particularly during the 19th and early 20th centuries, when coffee became the country's great economic engine. Coffee was grown throughout the Central Valley, and preparing a good cup became an important part of everyday family life. The chorreador was inexpensive, practical, and perfectly suited to rural households. The wooden stands were often handmade, sometimes beautifully carved, and the cloth filters could be washed and reused. There was no electricity required, no complicated machinery, and certainly no need for somebody behind a counter asking, “Would you like that in a grande, venti, extra-foam, oat-milk configuration?” You got coffee!

But the chorreador was about much more than making coffee. It was a social ritual. A Costa Rican morning often began with the aroma of freshly brewed coffee filling the kitchen, with family members gathering around the table to talk, eat gallo pinto, and begin the day. A neighbor dropping by might be offered a cup. A visitor was welcomed with coffee. Conversations stretched a little longer because there was another cup to pour. In that sense, the chorreador became part of the very fabric of Pura Vida—the idea that life isn't merely about getting somewhere, but about enjoying the people and moments along the way.

Today, modern coffee makers have certainly found their way into Costa Rican homes, but the chorreador hasn't disappeared. It has become almost a symbol of Costa Rican identity and traditional coffee culture. You can still find beautifully crafted wooden chorreadores in homes, coffee shops, souvenir stores, and traditional settings throughout the country. And there is something wonderfully appropriate about that. Costa Rica produces some of the world's finest coffee, yet one of its most beloved ways of preparing it remains remarkably uncomplicated: good coffee, hot water, a cloth filter, and time. Maybe that's part of the secret of Pura Vida itself—sometimes the best things don't need to be complicated.

Passport Book, Passport Card—or Both? ✈️🛳️🚗

Here are the key differences to help you decide:

📘 Passport Book: Required for international travel by air. It can also be used for international travel by land or sea.

💳 Passport Card: A convenient, wallet-sized form of government-issued identification. It can be used when entering the United States by land or sea from Canada, Mexico, Bermuda, and the Caribbean—but it cannot be used for international air travel.

✅ Both options are REAL ID–compliant and can be used for domestic air travel.

I have been a fan of UNICO 20°87° Riviera Maya for years!

Their style is exactly what I love in an adults-only resort: beautiful, upscale and luxurious, but still relaxed and not stuffy. Great food, gorgeous rooms, personalized service and that easy, laid-back luxury feel.

So I am VERY excited about this news...

UNICO is coming to JAMAICA! 🇯🇲

Reservations are officially open for the new UNICO 18°77° Montego Bay, opening March 1, 2027. This will be UNICO's first adults-only, all-inclusive resort outside of Mexico, located on Jamaica's North Shore just 15 minutes from the Montego Bay airport.

And the opening pricing right now is fantastic.

🌴 Swim-out rooms starting around $490 per night
🌴 July 13–20, 2027: $3,424 TOTAL for TWO!

The resort will feature 451 oceanfront rooms and suites, all with ocean views, plus private outdoor hydro spa tubs or swim-up pool access.

There will also be:
• 9 restaurants and bars featuring international and Jamaican flavors
• 4 pools
• Pickleball and paddle courts
• Complimentary access to championship golf
• UNICO's 24/7 Local Host service
• The largest Esencia Wellness Spa in the UNICO collection, with 32 treatment suites

I already know this one is going on my list! ❤️

If Jamaica has been calling your name for 2027, this opening pricing makes it a GREAT time to start planning.

So many interesting pubs, so little time.🍻🇮🇪
This pub in the heart of Kilkenny dates back to the 14th-century and was made famous due to its notorious owner, Dame Alice Kyteler, who was accused of witchcraft. She was sentenced to death but escaped her fate by fleeing the country. It is now best known for its authentic Irish food and music, both of which are available daily. Have you been to Kyteler’s Inn?
