BYC Then and Now: Junior Sailing

Introducing children to sailing was as important more than 90 years ago at the Beverly Yacht Club as it is today.

In 1925, Cape Cod Shipbuilding introduced the Cape Cod Knockabout, aka the Baby Knockabout, an 18-foot sloop which offered ease of handling. By 1930, a small fleet was active in BYC racing. The 1930 Yearbook listed 15 boats in the fleet, and they raced regularly throughout the season. According to the Racing Rules, the crew was limited to 3 people, unless the people were under 15 years old, in which case, they were to be counted as half a person. The 1931 Yearbook records the introduction of a Baby Knockabout Trophy given by William J. Minot and awarded to William J. Minot, Jr. for his performance aboard Humdinger.

Today, BYC has an active junior program designed to initiate our youngest members into the sport and our Cruise Committee hosts family fun cruises. Thanks to for providing information on the Cape Cod Knockabout!

This weekend, 29 boats from a class with a 111-year history at BYC will take to the outer harbor for the 2026 H Class Championship.

After receiving a request from Robert W. Emmons II of Monument Beach to create a smaller boat younger sailors could manage on Buzzards Bay, Nathanael G. Herreshoff designed a twelve-and-a-half-foot long vessel. BYC began sailing the boats in 1915 and they became popular with sailors of all ages. Today, the Club's H12 fleet races several times a week throughout the summer. As with many of the original wooden boats and now even with their fiberglass descendants, many have stayed in families through several generations. You might recognize a name or two from the list of original boats commissioned in 1914.

From 1928 to 1972, Class Championships were held annually by the Beverly Yacht Club as a single race competition over an elongated course. Since 1973, a Championship has been conducted by the H Class Association and hosted by a different association club each year on a rotating schedule. Summer’s in full swing at BYC! Here’s a belated update on some of our recent activities:

Last weekend’s Tower/Salty Race brought a little bit of everything - from a beautiful calm breeze to a 37-knot gust squall. We had an impressive number of finishers for the Tower Race proving the new combined format was a success with momentum for 2027. The weekend wrapped up with a memorable awards dinner. Thank you to all racers, sponsors, partners, volunteers and our wonderful BYC staff who made it all possible!

Several of our junior members participated in the New Bedford Junior Regatta and the Edgartown Junior Regatta last week - congratulations to all of our BJYC sailors!

Our Bullseye and H-12 fleets had picture-perfect conditions for their weekly Sunday afternoon racing yesterday and on July 25 and 26, 28 boats representing several New England H-12 fleets will convene in Marion to race in the H Class Championship. We’re looking forward to seeing everyone!

The Tower Race and Salty 100 Race starts tomorrow with a first warning at 1055 off Centerboard. Follow your favorite team LIVE with the YB tracking app or online at https://pro.yb.tl/salty100_26/

We're excited about this new course format where Tower Race competitors sail the traditional 48-mile loop either clockwise or counterclockwise while Salty 100 competitors will do the same and then add a second loop. All Salty 100 competitors will also be scored for the Tower Race. An awards dinner will be held Saturday evening at the BYC.
