From railroad to recreation destination, the Marion Tallgrass Trail is a journey through history and nature.

What began as a 12-year effort to transform a former Erie-Lackawanna rail line into public green space became a community treasure stretching 12.4 miles to the Hardin County line — more than 24 miles round trip! Completed in 2017, the trail now invites walkers, runners, cyclists, and nature lovers to experience Marion County from a new perspective.

Along the way, explore the beauty of Big Island Wildlife Preserve, where bald eagles soar overhead, trumpeter swans glide through the wetlands, and beavers quietly shape the landscape. Stop near Marion Community Foundation Lake for kayaking, canoeing, or fishing, and don’t miss the Airfoils Club flying along Herr Road. The trail even travels through a tunnel beneath Riley Road before continuing toward the county line.

Best of all? The straight, flat terrain is handicap accessible, and free programs led by the county naturalist help visitors connect even more deeply with the outdoors.
Adventure, wildlife, history, and community — it’s all waiting on the Marion Tallgrass Trail.

This year's 3rd Annual Marion County Safety Cadet Car & Bike Show is happening today.

All makes and models are welcome, and registration ($10) begins at 10 a.m. at the Marion County Sheriff's Office | 100 Executive Drive.

Stop by to admire the vehicles and support this City/County program. The event will feature food trucks, a 50/50 raffle, and door prizes.

All proceeds benefit the Marion County Public Safety Cadets, helping cover uniforms, equipment, and competition registration so the program can remain free for Marion County and City youth.

As part of the America 250 Marion celebration, the Marion Public Library, in conjunction with the National First Ladies Library & Museum, presents The Untold Stories of Ohio's First Ladies display.

From June 2-29, 2026, guests may enjoy “The Untold Stories of Ohio’s First Ladies,” a dynamic, interactive traveling kiosk exhibit that shines a spotlight on the lives, leadership, and legacy of Ohio’s most influential First Ladies.

The exhibit is offered with support from Ohio Humanities – America 250.
