The North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) awarded a contract in 2019 to replace the Sugar Hill Road bridge over I-40 and improve the Exit 81 interchange. The original bridge was over 60 years old at that time. Improvements included constructing a new three-lane bridge, reducing curvature on ramps, extending the eastbound on-ramp, and updating pavement and drainage for safety and capacity. Construction began in mid-2019 with a scheduled completion in 2022.
