🔥 Highway 140 Update — 233 acres, 20% contained

If you're heading to Yosemite and saw fire news near Mariposa, here's the current status:

🚧 Hwy 140 is still closed between Briceburg and the Bug Hostel (below Midpines toward El Portal)
✅ Once you're past El Portal, 140 into the Valley is open
✅ Hwy 41 and Hwy 120 are open and unaffected
✅ Mariposa town and our e-bike tours are outside the fire zone — running normal schedule
✅ Yosemite National Park has stayed open the entire time

Containment is climbing (20%, up from 15% last night), and overnight fire activity was minimal — trending in the right direction.

Full breakdown + real-time links to check before you drive 👇

Highway 140 is closed east of Mariposa due to the Colorado Fire, but Yosemite National Park and Mariposa remain open. Here’s the latest on the fire, road closure and alternate routes.

Driving Highway 140 to Yosemite? There’s a lot worth stopping for before you reach the park.

We put together a local guide to the Highway 140 corridor—from coffee at Sticks Coffee, barbecue at Smokin' Oak BBQ, drinks at The Alley, and events at The Grove House, to staying at Mariposa Hotel Inn or Wildhaven Yosemite.

And if you have a few extra hours in Mariposa, you can get off the highway altogether and explore the Sierra Foothills with Yosemite E-Biking.

The guide also covers the Merced River Canyon, El Portal, Arch Rock, and what to know before heading into Yosemite in 2026.

If you're traveling Highway 140, don't make Mariposa just the place you drive through.

Arrival and departure days around Yosemite are easy to waste.

Maybe you get to Mariposa at noon, and it feels too late to start another Yosemite hike. Or you’ve checked out of your hotel but still have half a day before you need to head home.

You can do quite a bit with that time.

I put together a guide to some of my favorite options around Mariposa—from e-biking through the foothills and gold panning to climbing, local history, and a few ideas when you only have a couple of hours.

Have a few hours before check-in or after checkout? Discover things to do near Yosemite in Mariposa, from e-bike tours to gold panning and climbing.

Late summer is here in the Sierra Foothills. ☀️🚲

The hills around Mariposa have turned gold, the mornings are starting to cool down, and fall is right around the corner—one of my favorite times of year to ride.

I just sent out the latest Yosemite E-Biking newsletter with a look at what riding is like this time of year, what we’ve been up to, and why September and October are such good months to explore the backroads outside Yosemite.

If you're planning a Yosemite trip this fall, come see a side of the area most visitors miss.

Thinking about bringing your e-Bike to Yosemite National Park?

The rules are simpler than many people think—but there are a few important restrictions every rider should know before they arrive. In this guide, I explain where Class 1, 2, and 3 e-Bikes are allowed, which bike paths you can ride, the 15 mph speed limit in Yosemite Valley, and the areas that remain off-limits.
