Visiting Yosemite this weekend?

Visiting Yosemite this weekend? Things are heating up! 🔥

A heat wave is making its way to Yosemite this weekend, with temperatures well into the 90s expected in the park’s lower elevations, including Yosemite Valley. Conditions are currently forecast to cool off again on Monday. Know these tips to stay safe and cool in the heat:

😌 Rest often. Find shade when possible. Take more breaks than you would on a hike in cooler weather.

☀️ Minimize hiking during the hottest part of the day by starting early in the morning or later in the afternoon.

💧 Pack extra water and stay hydrated! Bring salty snacks and/or electrolytes to replace the salts lost through sweat, especially if you are hiking.

🌊 Be VERY cautious around water. While pools of water may look enticing, many areas of the park’s waterways have swift, dangerous currents right now. NEVER approach or enter the water above a waterfall. Most drowning accidents occur when the person never intended to get in the water.

👥 Check in frequently with your group members (and yourself!) to be sure everyone is feeling good. Know your limits and remember that safety is more important than any destination.

Behold…one of the most dangerous animals in Yosemite National Park!

When you think of dangerous wildlife, your mind might go to the mighty black bear or the elusive mountain lion. But every year, more injuries in Yosemite are caused by deer than by any other animal in the park.

Known for their “mule-like” ears, mule deer can be found grazing in meadows, chewing on bushes along trails, or crossing roads throughout the park. While these animals may seem harmless to humans, they are still wild and skittish. Equipped with sharp hooves and antlers, a deer will lash out and defend itself if startled. This happens most often when visitors try to approach or feed them.

A good rule to remember: feeding or approaching wildlife in Yosemite is illegal. Not only is this crucial for your safety, but it also helps protect wildlife from becoming too accustomed to humans. While they might appear friendly and adorable, mule deer are, at their core, wild animals that deserve their space.

So, on your next trek through the park, please keep your distance and admire these creatures from afar. Sometimes, the most picturesque animals can pack an unexpected punch!

❄️Winter Storm Warning! ❄️

We are expecting snow throughout the park over the next several days. If you plan to visit the park soon, please prepare for cold weather, with the possibility of traffic delays or temporary road closures!

❄️Before you head out, stay informed by calling 209/372-0200 (then 1, 1) for the latest road conditions. This recording provides essential updates on current conditions in the park, including chain requirements.

❄️Tire chains will be required on most or all park roads. When chain requirements are in effect, every vehicle (including four-wheel drive and rental vehicles) must have chains in possession. Read more about tire chains at: https://go.nps.gov/chains.

❄️Don't forget to layer up! Exploring Yosemite in winter can be a unique and beautiful experience. But it's not as fun if you are unprepared! Bring waterproof shoes, jackets, gloves, and headgear to keep yourself cozy during your visit.
