I've spent a lot of time taking people to small places in Scotland and trying to explain why the small ones have a certain magic, and I've never found a good way to say what I want to say about Marshall, our North Carolina home. The closest I can get is math.

In most places you visit, you're one of many. The town goes on basically the same without you.

Marshall is small enough that this isn't true. Whoever is on Main Street on a given day is who Main Street is that day. If one person is gone, they're missed. That's a funny thing to be told when you're the visitor, because it means you don't get absorbed into the scenery. You're part of the count.

So if you come, don't be in a hurry. And don't discount your presence.

There's no place like it, and I say that as someone who has made a career of looking. Join The Hidden Heart of Marshall #2 in March, 2027, because November filled so quickly. ONE double room left. Message me for details.

Time sensitive - ends Sept 1st

Some news I thought you'd like to hear. Siobhan Miller gives private concerts for most of our tour groups. She and Euan are so lovely and world class musicians and we are fortunate they remain such an integral part of our community-led tourism effort. She is going into the studio next week to record a new album, live over three days in Glasgow with her full band.

No months of planning, just three days in the studio, and it's booked so there's no going back!

Siobhan has opened a pre-order so people can follow the sessions as they happen, with a few ways to be involved: digital access through to vinyl, your name in the album sleeve, and a small number of First Listen and Executive Producer places.

VISIT MARSHALL - Ok, I'm doing it again. The first one filled so we have a second date: March 16th for 5 nights.

There are some places that do not give up their stories easily.

You have to stay awhile.

You have to sit where the locals sit, listen when the music begins, and allow the place to reveal itself in its own time.

Next Spring, I'm inviting a small group of 10 to do exactly that in Marshall, North Carolina. I work so hard in Scotland to develop community led tourism in the towns we stay.

Community-led in my hometown is a no brainer!

For five March nights this year, we will make our home in the heart of our Appalachian river town, staying in the historic Old Marshall Jail.

This is an invitation into the life and stories of a place. There will be music and history, nature and friends. Message me if you are interested.

Great news! We have filled the "Heart of Marshall Retreat" - however we can take one more couple in our 1850 Story Cottage, adjacent to the Allen House. She's adorable! Let me know if you have an interest. This is a one-time event since we are having to sell our Marshall home. Here are the deets:
