From ATV rides across windswept pastures, lush forest trails, and down to the Tasman Sea at Wharekauhau Lodge, to an authentic cultural connection with the local Māori community—this was more than travel. It was meaning in motion.

We capped it off with cones of Hokey Pokey ice cream from a family-run creamery (because supporting local tastes sweet). And yes, that's me fly fishing in the pristine waters near Huka Lodge, where the silence is only broken by the rush of the river and the whisper of your line.

Walking aimlessly through Milan, lost in a blissful mix of shopping and people-watching, when I was suddenly stopped in my tracks by something far more powerful than any storefront.

These brass plaques are called Stolpersteine—or “stumbling stones.” They’re set into the sidewalks across Europe, placed in front of the last chosen residences of victims of the Holocaust. Each one honors a life stolen—like Teresa Hertz and Mario De Benedetti, both arrested in Milan and murdered in Auschwitz in 1944.

A humbling reminder that even amid the beauty and energy of a city like Milan, the echoes of history are beneath our feet—quietly asking us to remember.
