Day 2 and 3 and we had a super fun time exploring Fairbanks with our small group and our 6 year old grandson, Wilder at the the Riverboat Discovery Tour where we got to experience A float plane demonstration on the Chena River, a dog sled talk and demonstration at the famous Susan Butcher kennels. She was the first female Iditarod winner and won it 4 times on a row! She passed in 2006 from cancer but her husband and daughters carry on her passion for the sled dogs and Iditarod!
From there, the boat took us to a traditional native Athabaskan village to learn all about the way the indigenous people survived the harsh weather up here! This a really great for young and old! Wilder learned all about how they smoked the fish and what salmon they used for dog food!
From there we headed to Denali National Park and Preserve to stay for 2 nights and explore this amazing National Park! We hope we get to see Mt Denali (McKinley) but it looks like it will be a cloudy day so not putting too much hope for it! Only 30% of the people get to see it clearly🙌

We made it to Fairbanks, Alaska yesterday on the longest day of the year. Sunset here was at 1am but to call it a sunsets is funny as it barely got even dimmer as there is officially 24 hours of daylight on this day because the sun doesn’t go below the horizon. Thank goodness for room darkening shades!
Today, we experienced Gold Panning at the Gold Dredge 8 Gold Mine where we took a train to the old gold mine and had fun panning for gold! We ended up with $87 worth of gold which is awesome! Needless to say, Wilder thinks he is Rich!!
We had a yummy dinner by the river in the sunshine as it is 85 degrees here which is the hottest day of the year so far. We took a wonderful walk on the lodge trail over to see Pikes Landing, a cute hotel with cabins right on the river and the official start of the Iditarod Race every first Saturday in March! We also got to see reindeer that were molting their fur during the summer.
Tomorrow, we depart Fairbanks to start our 14 day exploration of Alaska. We will have a fun Riverboat ride on the Chena River and head to Denali National Park! Stay tuned for 2 weeks of Adventures!!
