These little Scandanavian gummies have earned a permanent place in our packs. Why? Let us count the ways.

Awesomely gruesome.

Awesomely gruesome.

There are countless ways to meet your end in the great outdoors. These are ten of the most unpleasant, ignominious, and terrifying ways to go.

Matt Olson in a quiet moment on the Green River. Matt and his buddies took MADFOG to a new level of crazy and the rowdy fun resulted in the loss of 50% of the group’s cellphones, which were useless along the river anyway. Right after the trip, the west side of Labyrinth Canyon was designated as a wilderness area.

And then, that canoe trip down the Green River where these guys cooked the most incredible meals and served me from a well-stocked bar every night. Even though the winds blew us back upstream most of the time, and we got a good dose of rain and snow, it was an epic adventure through Labyrinth Canyon.

After 20 years, I’ve acquired a rogues gallery of guys who have gone on adventures with me. So, I decided to create the MADFOG MUG SHOTS to celebrate the great companions along the way. Not complete yet, but interesting….

Possible 2nd trip to Neon Canyon in Grand Staircase/Escalante National Monument.

Secret Native American site in Utah…reconnaissance only.

Keet Seel if it ever opens up again.

Yet another Green River rafting trip.

Possible San Juan River Rafting trip/pack raft/option

Possible Domingues Escalante National Conservation Area

Some other high point near Telluride.

With over 20 alumni members, I know there are plenty of victims out there to join me as these trips develop into reality.

Happy Birthday to Madfoggian Scott Levy, who now is a fully vested member due to having achieved the age of 50 today. This is the MADFOG milestone. Scott earned Associate Status in MADFOG after joining founder Ken Mitchell on a trip with their wives through Desolation Canyon on the Green River in Utah. Scott survived a wildly scary small plane ride over the Desolation Canyon Wilderness, a crazy bumpy landing on a dirt airstrip on top of a plateau, numerous rapids, crazy windstorms, unseasonably cold temperatures, a crushing slow motion raft crash and overall the worst weather I’ve seen in Utah in 50 years. For the entire trip, this guy had a smile on his face and kept coming back for more.

Scott is now the President of the South Carolina Chapter of MADFOG, and serves along with his wife Lori, President of the Women’s Auxiliary. Some time soon, we’ll all be exploring Congaree National Park, as soon as we can figure out where the heck it is.

MADFOG is an equal opportunity adventure travel site.
