Most people see an old mansion.

But the Hunt-Phelan House holds one of Memphis’s hidden stories.

During the Civil War, one of the biggest turning points of the war was being planned right here in Memphis.

And the detail about how Grant treated the house afterward surprised me.

Memphis history has layers 🎸

Most people come to Memphis for Elvis — but that’s just the beginning.

The same streets he walked were walked by blues giants.
The same radio stations he listened to were shaping the sound of the city.

Sun Studio wasn’t an accident.
It was a boiling pot — church, Beale Street, WDIA, country, blues — all cooking together into something the world had never heard before.

Billy Bob Thornton mentioned on CBS Mornings that he still gets his clothes from Lansky Brothers.
I smiled immediately.

Because Lansky’s was never just a store.
It helped define how rock ’n’ roll looked, not just how it sounded.

They dressed Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, and just about every major entertainer passing through Memphis.
Those sharp jackets and bold colors weren’t decoration — they were part of the performance.

Rock ’n’ roll didn’t arrive all at once.
It came together in small places like Lansky’s — where musicians learned how to look like they belonged on stage.

Memphis has a way of doing this.

Out running around the city and ran into David Porter — soul music legend, Stax songwriter, producer, and one of the architects of the Memphis sound.

David helped shape the music that shaped Elvis — and everyone from Otis Redding and Aretha Franklin to artists still being sampled today.

This is what I love about Memphis. The history isn’t behind glass. It’s still walking around, still telling stories, still connecting the dots.

This is the kind of context I bring into my tours — the real Memphis story, told through music, people, and places that matter.
