Behind the Tipton County Museum in Covington, a half-mile nature trail winds through the woods, and the leaves are turning right now. Walk the trail, stop by the Veterans Memorial, and challenge someone to a game on the giant checkerboard before you head home.

Here are four places to watch the leaves turn in West Tennessee, all an easy day trip from Memphis:

1. William B. Clark Conservation Area, Rossville
A 1,600-foot boardwalk winds through bald cypress and water tupelo along the Wolf River in Fayette County. It's open every day from dawn to dusk.

2. Fort Pillow State Historic Park, Henning
About 20 miles of hiking trails, many of them running alongside the old Civil War earthworks near the Mississippi River. Check in at the museum before you head out.

3. Tipton County Museum, Veterans Memorial & Nature Center, Covington
Behind the museum, a half-mile nature trail runs through the woods to a wetland area.

4. Mississippi River Overlook, Ripley
It opened in 2023 on the Chickasaw Bluffs off Highway 19 West. Look out over the river and down into a ravine full of trees.

The color won't hang around long, so plan your fall drive through the Mid-South soon.

Less than an hour from Memphis, you can walk straight into a cypress forest.
The William B. Clark Conservation Area is on the Wolf River in Rossville, Tennessee, in Fayette County. Park on the east side of Highway 194, just north of the Wolf River bridge, and follow the gravel path to the boardwalk.
The boardwalk runs about 1,600 feet through bald cypress and water tupelo trees standing in the water. Wetland forests like this are getting hard to find in West Tennessee. At the end, it opens up to a marsh where you can sit and take it all in.
This was filmed in mid-October, right as the leaves were starting to turn. If you want to take a fall day trip in the Mid-South, make plans before winter sets in.
