Tucked away on a quiet street in Summerville, Georgia, paradise looks a little different than you might expect. Here, broken dishes sparkle in the sunlight, bicycle parts become sculptures, and colorful creations seem to appear around every corner.

Welcome to Paradise Garden, the wonderfully imaginative world of Howard Finster, a Baptist preacher and self-taught artist who began transforming this property in 1961. What started as a personal project grew into an extraordinary folk art wonderland, filled with mosaic pathways, quirky towers, hand-painted messages, and the remarkable five-story World's Folk Art Church.

Finster believed art could carry a message, and he created more than 46,000 works during his lifetime. His unusual artistic style even caught the attention of musicians, including R.E.M. and Talking Heads, bringing a little piece of Summerville into the national spotlight.

Today, visitors can wander the garden at their own pace, discovering something unexpected with every turn. You can even spend the night in one of the property's unique accommodations.

For travelers who love quirky roadside attractions and unforgettable hidden gems, Paradise Garden is proof that extraordinary discoveries often await in America's smallest towns.

Most people have no idea Alabama actually has a ski resort!

High on Lookout Mountain near Mentone sits Cloudmont Ski Resort, where people can ski and snowboard without ever leaving Alabama.

The resort dates back to the 1970s and has traditionally featured two beginner-to-intermediate slopes, each about 1,000 feet long.

But there's a catch. Alabama doesn't get enough natural snow for a reliable ski season, so Cloudmont depends on freezing temperatures and snowmaking machines.

After several years of limited operation, volunteers helped bring skiing back to Cloudmont in January 2025. Skiers returned again during the winter of 2026.

It's a small mountain experience compared with resorts farther north, but that's part of what makes it so unusual.

A real ski slope in Alabama!

🍁🎨 THIS ALABAMA FALL FESTIVAL COMES WITH MOUNTAIN ROADS, WATERFALLS & SOME OF LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN’S BEST AUTUMN SCENERY!

The Mentone Fall Festival returns October 17, 2026, and the festival itself is only part of the reason to make the trip.

Held at Moon Lake Campus in Mentone, the celebration brings together 80+ art vendors, food vendors and live music from 9 AM to 4 PM. But once you reach this little mountain community, you’re surrounded by the scenery that makes October on Lookout Mountain so special.

Make DeSoto Falls part of your drive and see the 104-foot waterfall dropping into its sandstone gorge.

Stop at Brow Park in Mentone for an easy cliffside overlook across the valley.

Have more time? Continue toward DeSoto State Park and the Little River Canyon Rim Parkway, where overlooks, forest roads and canyon walls turn the drive itself into an autumn attraction.

Then head back to Mentone for art, music, food and the relaxed mountain-town atmosphere of festival day.

Mentone Fall Festival & fall-trip details

My pick for the day: arrive early, see DeSoto Falls before the festival, spend the middle of the day at Moon Lake Campus, then finish at Brow Park for the mountain views. That turns one festival into a full Festival Weekend Discovery + Scenic Escape.
