High up in the mountains of northeast Alabama, the tiny town of Mentone feels like a completely different world from the rest of the state. The roads get quieter, the air feels cooler, and suddenly you are surrounded by mountain views, giant boulders, waterfalls, and cabins tucked deep into the woods. For a lot of people, renting a cabin in Mentone has become one of the best weekend getaways in Alabama.

Some cabins sit right on the edge of the mountain with huge views stretching for miles, while others are hidden in the trees with hot tubs, fireplaces, and wraparound porches. It is one of those places where people go to unplug for a few days, especially in the fall when the leaves start changing colors. You wake up to fog rolling through the mountains, drink coffee on the porch, and feel like you are nowhere near the rest of the world.

Mentone has always had a quiet, peaceful feel to it. The town is small, but it is close to places like DeSoto Falls, Little River Canyon National Preserve, and all kinds of hiking trails, scenic drives, and overlooks. It is one of those Alabama places that people discover once and then keep going back to over and over again.

One of Alabama’s most stunning places during spring and summer…the Little River Canyon is a deep, rugged canyon carved by the Little River in northeast Alabama near Fort Payne. It is one of the deepest canyons east of the Mississippi River and sits inside Little River Canyon National Preserve, where the river flows along the top of Lookout Mountain before dropping into the canyon below. The river forms several beautiful waterfalls and clear swimming holes surrounded by tall canyon walls and forest. The best known is Little River Falls, a 45-foot waterfall that pours over a wide rock ledge into a deep pool below. You can see the falls from an easy roadside overlook or walk down to the rocks near the water at certain spots both above and below the falls. Several hiking trails in the preserve lead to other quiet swimming holes, smaller waterfalls, and scenic views along the river, making this one of the best outdoor places to explore in Alabama.
