Making the most of our last day in Croatia before flying to Paris.
With hours to kill before our flight, I arranged a private transfer from Sibenik to Split with a stop in Trogir. This allowed us to explore Troir, a UNESCO-listed medieval island town and enjoy a relaxed lunch on the waterfront before heading to the airport (just 15 minutes away!). Ancient stone streets, a 13th-century cathedral, and a seaside fortress beat an airport terminal any day. 😉

Krka National Park 💦🌿

A short drive from Šibenik, Krka National Park was one of those places that photos just can’t fully capture.

The wooden walkways wind right over and alongside the water, through shady forest and across little streams, making it a really pleasant hike through the park. The loop around Skradinski Buk, the park’s most famous waterfall, is easy to follow and full of “stop and take a photo” moments around every bend.

⚡ History hides in the park too. The old hydroelectric plant here opened in 1895, making it one of the earliest alternating-current power plants in the world.

🚫🏊 No swimming anymore. Swimming at Skradinski Buk used to be allowed but is now prohibited to protect the falls, so plan to enjoy them from the walkways.

💡 Candid Tip: Go early in the day to beat the crowds and the heat, wear comfortable shoes with good grip (the boardwalks can be damp near the falls), and bring water. Allow at least 2 to 3 hours to enjoy the loop without rushing.

Šibenik, Croatia 🇭🇷⚓

Our Croatia sailing adventure wrapped up in Šibenik, and what a way to end it. This stone city climbs up the hillside from the harbor, with narrow lanes, hidden staircases, and fortress views around every corner.

A few fun facts that made us love it even more:

🏛️ It’s Croatia’s oldest native town. Unlike many coastal cities founded by Greeks or Romans, Šibenik was founded by Croats, and it was first mentioned in 1066.

⛪ The Cathedral of St. James is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It took more than 100 years to build and is constructed entirely of stone. Look for the frieze of 71 carved faces around the outside. Each one is different, and some are said to be portraits of local townspeople from the 1400s!

🌿 It’s the gateway to Krka National Park, famous for its waterfalls, just a short drive inland. We visted it on day 2 in Šibenik.

🎬 TV fans may recognize it. Parts of the old town were used as a filming location for Game of Thrones.

💡 Candid Tip: Wear good walking shoes! Šibenik is all stone steps and slippery polished streets.

When the sea says “not today” ⛵🌊

One thing I always tell clients about sailing trips: the itinerary is more of a wish list than a promise. Out on the water, the weather gets the final say, and on our Croatia sailing trip, strong winds and rough seas meant our captain changed course to avoid the rough seas

Instead of our planned stop, we tucked into Zlarin, a little island just off the coast near Šibenik, and honestly? It was a lovely surprise.

Regular cars aren’t allowed on Zlarin, so the whole island has this calm, unhurried feel. People get around on foot or by bike (locals do use small electric vehicles for getting things done). No traffic noise, no rushing, just quiet lanes, stone houses, and the sea all around.

💡 Candid Tip: If you’re booking a sailing or small-ship trip, go in flexible. Itinerary changes happen for your safety and comfort, and sometimes the “backup plan” ends up being a highlight. Pack a light rain jacket, motion-sickness remedies, and an open mind!

We were lucky enough to have Lejla as our tour guide. She was born and raised in Zadar, and her insight made all the difference. She brought this city to life for us, and there is a LOT of life to bring. Zadar is the oldest continuously inhabited city in Croatia, with more than 3,000 years of history layered into its streets.

The first thing that stopped me in my tracks? The massive defense walls. The Venetians fortified Zadar in the 1500s to hold off the Ottomans, and those walls are now part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

After touring the city and exploring the Permanent Exhibition of Religious Art, we headed to the waterfront for sunset at the Sea Organ. 🌅 Steps carved into the promenade hide pipes underneath, and as the waves roll in, the sea literally plays music. No two songs are ever the same.

Right next to it is the Greeting to the Sun, a huge glass circle set into the pavement with smaller circles for each planet, sized in proportion to the sun. It soaks up solar energy all day, and after dark it lights up in a dazzling show of colors. ✨ Sea Organ by sound, Greeting to the Sun by light, both by the same Zadar architect, Nikola Bašić.

💡 Candid Tip: Time your visit so you're on the waterfront about 30 minutes before sunset. Grab a spot on the Sea Organ steps, then stay until it's dark enough for the Greeting to the Sun to light up. Best free show in Croatia!

🍰👩‍🍳 I made a Rab cake! (Well... with a little help) 👩‍🍳🍰

As promised, here’s the sweetest part of our day in Rab, Croatia! 🇭🇷

We were treated to a demonstration of how the traditional Rab cake (Rapska torta) is made, and when they asked for a volunteer, guess whose hand went up first? 🙋‍♀️

With some expert guidance (and a lot of patience from our host 😂), I rolled up my sleeves and made this centuries-old almond cake. The pros create beautiful, intricate designs. Mine? A simple rectangle.

We wrapped up our day enjoying pizza! 🍕 Cheers to another extraordinary day!

After yesterday’s w**e and Roman ruins in Krk, we moved on to the island of Rab, and it did not disappoint! 🇭🇷

We started with a walking tour of Rab Town, winding through medieval stone streets and taking in its famous four bell towers rising above the old town. Every turn gave us another view over the Adriatic and another story about the town’s long history. 📸

We also got our first taste of the famous Rab cake (Rapska torta), a sweet almond treat with centuries of tradition behind it. 🍰 And I didn’t just eat it... I helped make it! More on that in my next post. 😉

Day 3 in Croatia and it keeps getting better. ✨

🏰🍷 A day in Krk, Croatia 🍷🏰

Our day on the island of Krk started with a short walking tour of Krk Town, where we got to know more about this Roman Era town, it's ancient city walls and the Frankopan Castle. Every corner here has a story! 🇭🇷

Then came a highlight: a stop in the Secret Garden to sip the region’s famous Žlahtina white w**e with our new friends. 🥂 The garden and its surrounding architecture sit among ruins dating back roughly 2,000 years to Roman times. Think ancient stone walls, structural remnants, and underground spaces and catacombs, all tucked away in this hidden spot.

Sipping local w**e surrounded by two millennia of history? What a great afternoon. We docked right in town, so an easy walk back to our boat.

Started the next part of our trip in Opatija and the first stop is Cres. We sail a couple of hours during the day and are docked each night. This is a nice change that allows you to enjoy the view while sailing and the town for the evening. No rushing back to the boat.
