🦎 : The Lizard That Strikes a Pose! 🦎

Walking near a Florida beach, seawall, or patio you may find the Northern Curly-Tailed Lizard or (Leiocephalus carinatus) staring back at you, with its tail curled up like a scorpion.

Did You Know!

The Signature Curl: isn't just for looks, scientists believe they curl and wag their tails to show predators (and rival lizards) that they are alert, healthy, and too fast to bother chasing.

They were intentionally introduced to Palm Beach in the 1940s to help control sugarcane pests.

While they thrive in the Sunshine State, they are actually native to the Bahamas, Cuba, and the Cayman Islands.

The Northern Curly-Tailed Lizard is robust, fast, and territorial, and are excellent hunters and will eat insects, flowers, and even smaller native lizards like the green anole.

Happy from beautiful Cocoa Beach! 🌴🦆
Whether you're a local hitting the links or a visitor exploring our sunny shores, you might actually hear a flock of these birds before you see them. Meet the Black-bellied Whistling-Duck!

Instead of a classic "quack," these colorful locals communicate with a high-pitched, squeaky whistle. 🎶 With their bright red bills, pink legs, and upright posture, they are truly a sight to see.

Here is what makes spotting them around Cocoa Beach so fun:
🌳 They are "Tree Ducks": Those long legs aren't just for show! They actually prefer perching on tree branches and fences rather than waddling on the ground.
🌙 Night Owls: They love to forage in our shallow waters and marshes under the stars.
⛳ Community Favorites: You can often spot them hanging out year-round near our local golf courses, parks, and wetland trails.

Whether you live here or are just visiting, keep a lookout around our local ponds and golf courses! 🌴☀️

It’s on the Space Coast!

Whether you’re visiting for the week or you're a lifelong Brevard local, spotting a Florida Manatee is always a magical experience. ✨🧜‍♀️

These gentle "sea cows" love cruising the Indian River Lagoon and our local canals. Want to spot one? Grab a kayak or paddleboard and look for flat, circular swirls on the water’s surface—those are manatee "footprints"! 🛶
Pro-Tip on the water: Always obey no-wake zones and give them plenty of space. Enjoy the view, but remember: look, don't touch! 🛑
Locals, let's help our visitors out! Drop your favorite manatee-viewing spots in the comments below! 👇

🚀🌕 Space Coast Stargazers: A piece of space history is crashing into the Moon tonight!

Back in Jan 2025, SpaceX launched two private lunar landers into space. Tonight, the rocket's discarded upper stage, that's about the size of a school bus. Will hit the lunar surface near Einstein Crater at 5,400 mph, carving out a fresh 90-foot crater! 💥

🔭 When to watch: Wednesday, Aug 5 at 2:35 AM EDT. Grab your high-powered telescopes. You might just spot the massive dust plume kicking up!

☁️ Merritt Island Local Weather: Mostly cloudy, ~78°F around 2:00 AM. 🌑✨
