Attention waterfowl hunters:
Waterfowl season is getting closer and the Free Public Duck Hunting Permit Lottery is now open. The first lottery runs until August 31, the second lottery runs from Sept 1 to Sept 15, the third lottery runs from Sept 16 to Sept 28 and any left-over permits after that will be available on a first come first served basis beginning at 8AM on October 1.

Mermet Lake SFWA will be issuing permits for all hunting locations (27) during the first week of season and the first week after the split. The decision to reduce permits was based off low permit use from the last two years and the results of the hunter survey that was available during the 2025/26 season. On hunting days when permits are not issued, a random daily drawing will take place for all hunting locations. If this season is like past seasons, no one should not draw a hunting location.

Habitat Update: Site staff have worked hard this year to provide waterfowl habitat and food. The site was looking great until the 10” rain in July that flooded everything out. Site staff have scrambled to get the water off and get millet broadcast and if the weather is favorable we hope to be in good shape.

During a presentation on July 31, wildlife biologist Adam Phillips addressed the topic of "Deer and Disease." The session focused on identifying illnesses within the deer population and outlined the proper protocols for the public to report symptomatic wildlife. Furthermore, Mr. Phillips clarified the roles of local district wildlife biologists and shared the necessary contact information for further inquiries. A robust question-and-answer period followed, drawing strong engagement from the audience.

Just a reminder!

On July 18th, twenty-one people attended the 18th Century Games event. Participants enjoyed playing a variety of traditional games, including Mancala, Shut the Box, Dominoes, Farkle, Cup and Ball, Pick-Up Sticks, and Nine Men's Morris. Tracey Johnson shared the history of each game and provided instructions on how to play. Jaelyn Clark, a student at Joppa High School, and Bonnie Grace of Friends of Fort Massac generously volunteered their time to assist the children throughout the event. Everyone had a wonderful time learning, playing, and enjoying these historic games together.
