Japan is one of those destinations where the itinerary can look perfect on paper and still miss some of the best parts.

You may want Tokyo and Kyoto, with the incredible restaurants, temples, neighborhoods, shopping and that unmistakable energy that makes Japan unlike anywhere else.

But then there’s another side of Japan.

Spending a night or two at a traditional ryokan, learning the etiquette of an onsen, hiking Mt. Fuji, or sitting down to a beautifully prepared kaiseki dinner can become just as memorable as the places you came to see. These are the moments that add another layer to the journey and let you experience Japan beyond its most famous stops.

Knowing how to incorporate them matters.

Which ryokans are worth the detour, and should you stay one night or two? Where does an onsen experience fit naturally into your route? When does it make sense to send your luggage ahead and travel with an overnight bag? How do the trains work, and how do you connect everything without seamlessly?
