On the morning of March 31, 1997 was the first day Barhas set foot on US soil. A few days earlier she and a handful of her friends started their long journey from Mongolia. A group of people filled with heart, bravery, hope and determination came to America leaving behind everything they know. For it was leaving her aging mom, loving husband, teenage son, and a 19 month old baby girl (Me) to come to America go offer her family what Mongolia couldn't at that time. She braved and started her journey taking the longest and loneliest journey to America for wanting better and more for her family.
A train to Beijing, a flight to Tokyo, and finally the last leg of their trip a flight to the United States of America.
She came to learn English, work hard, earn her permanent residency and bring the rest of her family with Green Cards in their hand as they set foot in America.
Many don't know how long this process is. To be separated from one's family for so long. But this is the origin story of DeZaya to Travel. This story is at its core what shaped me and my desire to Travel to hope and to dream.
Today marks 29 years of living in America for Barhas. My mom, endured, worked hard, poured her heart and soul into this journey. It's a day that is to be remembered and honored as a day to mark all that went into bringing many of my stories forward.
My mom's story of coming to America.
She spent 6.5 years separated from her family until she finally brought our family over to America legally with Green Cards in our hands. By the time our family reunited again I was 8 years old and finally saw my mom for the first time.
She is a pioneer and a pillar of the Mongolian community in the DC area. She's helped countless families and individuals through their own journey in America, being a friendly face and a guide to many.
My mom, Barhas' story is an important one to share today, because none of the stories of my travels would be possible without her.
