Play and Learn PreK

Play and Learn PreK Exploring, investigating, and creating through imagination and play. Our programs were created to foster children's sense of wonder and curiosity.

Early Childhood Development Center providing a developmentally appropriate program for 12 m to 5 year-old children. In addition to our regular preschool groups, Play and Learn PreK also offers a child centered inclusion group for preschoolers with mild to moderate learning differences. Each day children at Play and Learn are immersed in a curriculum that focuses on exploration and learning through

play and discovery. This establishes a strong foundation for learning and helps children understand and connect with their surrounding. At Play and Learn we foster healthy, conscientious, planet-responsible living. Concepts of sustainability, recycling, reusing, reducing, and conservation are integrated in our daily program and part of our routine.

Why are the preschool years so important?

Dr. Melissa Baralt, a professor of applied psycholinguistics, explains why early childhood is such a critical time for children’s language, learning, and overall development.

At Play and Learn, we believe children learn best when they feel safe, connected, curious, and free to explore. Through play, meaningful interactions, and intentional learning experiences, we help build the foundation children need to thrive.

The preschool years matter—and we’re proud to make them count.

Research now shows that language experience begins in the womb, especially in the third trimester—when babies can hear voices, rhythms, and speech patterns from outside.

Before birth: the first language imprint
Newborns exposed to one language vs. two languages in pregnancy already show different brain responses to speech sounds.
Babies who hear multiple languages before birth tend to:
* Show broader sensitivity to sound variations
* Respond to a wider range of pitch and vowel changes
* Develop early neural patterns that are less “narrowly tuned” to just one language

Meanwhile, babies exposed to a single language often show:
* More selective tuning to familiar sound patterns
This doesn’t mean one is better—it reflects how adaptable the developing brain is to its early environment.

* What happens after birth?
Once babies are born, this early foundation continues to grow:
* Home language builds the base for all future language learning
* Bilingual and monolingual children learn at similar rates when all languages are considered
* Brain networks adapt dynamically, supporting attention, memory, and flexible thinking

* What it looks like in real life:
Babies communicate long before words—through gaze, sound, movement, and rhythm. And they’re already tuned in to the languages around them from the very beginning of life.

Try this: supporting bilingual development from day one
• Talk and sing to your baby during pregnancy and after birth
• Use the languages that feel natural and meaningful to your family
• Pause and respond—create early “conversations”
• Stay expressive and rhythmic (babies love voice variation)
• Keep cultural connection at the center of language

Bilingualism is not just something children learn—it’s something their brains begin to adapt to even before they arrive.
