Engine 5, Engine 58, Ladder 13 and Rescue 71 were randomly selected to participate in a live house fire training exercise at the Fire Rescue Training Center on Thursday. In the scenario, crews responded to reports of a two-story residence with heavy smoke and fire extending into the garage, with occupants possibly trapped inside. Firefighters conducted fire attack, search and rescue, ventilation and command operations as they worked through the simulated incident. Following the evolution, training instructors conducted a critique of the operation, evaluating tactics, communication and overall performance while providing feedback and pointers to participating personnel.

The South Florida Emergency Planning Committee, serving Miami-Dade, Broward and Monroe Counties, conducted a multi-agency hazardous materials decontamination drill at Fort Lauderdale’s Chase Stadium on Wednesday morning. First responders from various departments, including Miami-Dade Fire Rescue, participated in the simulated chemical attack exercise, where volunteers portrayed victims exposed to hazardous materials. The large-scale training evolution focused on inter-agency coordination, mass decontamination procedures and emergency response readiness in the event of a real-world hazardous materials incident. Personnel from participating departments worked through the challenges of triage, decontamination and patient management while operating in protective equipment under realistic conditions.

Observed on the third Wednesday of May each year, National Trauma Survivors Day brings together trauma survivors, their families and the medical professionals who guided them through the long road to recovery. On Trauma Survivors Day 2026, HCA Florida Kendall Hospital reunited trauma patients with the physicians and caregivers who helped save their lives, creating emotional moments that highlighted resilience, compassion and hope. In many of these cases, personnel from Miami-Dade Fire Rescue played a critical role in those patients’ journeys, serving as the first point of contact on what was likely the worst day of their lives. Their rapid response, medical care and professionalism helped set the stage for the treatment and recovery that followed. Throughout the ceremony, stories of courage in the face of unimaginable hardship often left those in attendance in tears. Yet each survivor demonstrated extraordinary determination, supported by skilled physicians, nurses, first responders and loved ones, ultimately returning to the lives they once knew.

Miami-Dade Fire Rescue’s Special Events Bureau is responsible for coordinating staffing, inspections and life-safety coverage for large events across the county. Typically, MDFR personnel assigned to these events remain on standby for emergency readiness and prevention efforts. Major sporting events such as Miami Dolphins and Miami Marlins games, along with large festivals and cultural gatherings, require the presence of these personnel to ensure a rapid response in the event of an emergency, with the cost of coverage borne by the event operator, not the taxpayer. You may have seen their rescue carts, mini-rescue trucks, or even a mini-pumper at concerts, festivals, or the Miami-Dade County Fair. On Wednesday, the Special Events Bureau conducted a familiarization drill with select personnel, providing hands-on training in the operation of these specialized units.
