December is about more than where you go. It’s about how everyone stays together.

Three generations in the Caribbean? We’d look at how the bedrooms connect, or don’t. A chalet in Courchevel or the Dolomites? Six bedrooms don’t necessarily mean six equally good rooms.

And sometimes, one private residence makes more sense than several beautiful rooms across a resort.

These are the details we think about before choosing the property. Because the right floor plan can change the entire trip.

Japan in fall…

… and a reminder that the season doesn’t arrive everywhere at once.

It begins in the north and at higher elevations: Hokkaido and Tohoku first, then the Japanese Alps, before reaching Kyoto later in the season.

For Fall 2027, we’d plan around that progression, from mountain landscapes and smaller towns to Kyoto when the timing is right.

By now, most festive shortlists have the same names on them. This is the other list.

Japan’s legendary powder, without the queue: Appi Kogen in Tohoku, where the ANA InterContinental just became the region’s first Michelin Key hotel. The Dolomites at their most personal: Rosa Alpina, run by the same family since 1939, reopened as an Aman, facing its first festive season under that name. And the Caribbean before it got loud: Nevis, one volcano, one road, arrival by boat.

Each one is the quiet alternative to a famous obvious. By definition, the quiet alternatives have fewer rooms, and December is closer than it looks.

There are two ways to see the Nile. From a deck shared with four hundred people, or under sail, on a dahabiya chartered entirely for you.

The second one moors at islands the big boats pass, reaches temples before the gates get busy, and moves at the pace the river has kept for five thousand years.

In August 2027, there’s one more reason: six minutes of total eclipse directly over Luxor, the longest this century. The journey around those six minutes is being designed right now, and the rooms that matter are going first.

Part of this work is seeing what’s coming before it becomes obvious. Four signals we’re already tracking for 2027:

One. The whole family is coming: trips that work for a seven-year-old and a seventy-year-old at once.

Two. Six minutes of total eclipse over Luxor in August 2027, the longest this century, and hotels are already filling.

Three. The great hotel brands are now at sea, and coastlines read differently from the water.

Four. The property is becoming the reason for the trip, not the place you sleep between things.

An Alpine route that ends inside Italy’s Motor Valley. A golf journey where the ship is the hotel and the coast comes to you. A race weekend where everything except the checkered flag is already resolved.

And for whoever isn’t driving or playing: a parallel programme with the same level of intention. Nobody spends the week waiting.

Most people give Venice five nights. We give it two, and the difference isn’t the map, it’s what you’re let into.

Go in summer and you’ll get the crowds, the heat, the lines. Go in April, May, or September and the city starts to open.

What we plan there isn’t the checklist everyone runs. It’s an afternoon inside ’s atelier, the designer behind Venice’s Carnival, experiences that sit on no itinerary and no booking site. That’s one example of how we read this city. The rest stays between us and the people we take there.

Fireworks have launched from the Golden Gate Bridge twice in 90 years: 1987 and 2012, both for the bridge’s own anniversaries.

Tonight makes three, and for the first time the occasion is the country’s: America turns 250, with the towers themselves as the launch site and the bridge closing to all traffic, pedestrians included. The crowds are heading to Crissy Field; the clearest sightline is on the water.

On the other coast, the tall ships that led this morning’s parade for the semiquincentennial, the largest peacetime maritime gathering in American history, are staying docked in New York through July 8, open to visitors at Brooklyn Bridge Park and South Street Seaport. Tomorrow, Brazil vs. Norway at MetLife.

The 250th happens once. Nights like this don’t repeat on a schedule. We keep a running calendar of the ones that don’t and the next one is already on it.

Hay un lugar en Forte dei Marmi donde tienes que quedarte.

Y no es un hotel. Es una pensión.

Pensione America tiene solo 17 habitaciones, un jardín con limoneros, bicicletas vintage, una piscina de cerámica siciliana hecha a mano y una historia que empezó en 1899.

Después de cuatro años de restauración por Sara Maestrelli, el lugar conserva algo que no se puede fabricar: esa sensación de haber llegado a una casa muy especial en la costa Toscana.

Para mí, Forte dei Marmi no se trata de hacer más planes.

Se trata de elegir mejor.

Y este es exactamente el tipo de lugar que recomendaría para quienes quieren vivir Italia con más calma, más criterio y menos ruido.
