Last night, during the Michigan City Common Council meeting, Google announced it will gift the final $400,000 needed to complete funding for the Fedder’s Alley All-Inclusive Playground and Fitness Park project.

The contribution officially closes the gap on the transformational $5 million investment, bringing Michigan City one step closer to a fully inclusive space designed for play, fitness, connection, and community.

Years in the making, the project was sparked by a simple idea: everyone deserves a place to play. Mayor Angie said, “This is what momentum looks like … Michigan City continues to move forward, and tonight’s announcement is another example of the incredible things that can happen when people believe in this community.”

The city of Gary has formally tossed its hat into the ring as a possible home for the Chicago Bears, pitching several sites across the city as possible locations for a new stadium and mixed-use development.

City officials announced that three sites, ranging from 145 to 760 acres, are available to help woo the team, which nearly one month ago announced it would consider sites in northwest Indiana for a stadium amid an impasse with Illinois leaders over sites in Chicago and northwest suburban Arlington Heights.

“Gary’s proposal gives the Bears the tax certainty and stability that the organization says is key to success,” Gary Mayor Eddie Melton said in a written statement. “No other location offers this combination of proximity, identity alignment, and iconic visual connection to Chicago.”

Gary is about 30 miles southeast of Chicago, and each of the three sites put forth by the city — detailed on a website called BearStadiumDistrict.com and in a 20-page proposal — are considered “plug-and-play” by city officials, meaning they’re generally ready for intensive commercial development.
