The second Iowa Department of Natural Resources beach monitoring report of the season was released today.
The Iowa Great Lakes has seven locations tested and they were all evaluated as "OK for swimming" again.

• Crandalls Beach (Big Spirit Lake)
• Emerson Bay Beach (West Lake Okoboji)
• Gull Point Beach (West Lake Okoboji)
• Marble Beach (Big Spirit Lake)
• Orleans City Beach (Big Spirit Lake)
• Pikes Point Beach (West Lake Okoboji)
• Triboji Beach (West Lake Okoboji)

Experts we've talked to remind swimmers that lakes are not treated water (like your chlorinated municipal pool is, for example). You can still encounter bacteria, etc. that potentially triggers illness, so be aware.

Likewise, the Iowa DNR “swimming not recommended” advisories are based on the potential of 36+ in 1,000 people potentially getting a gastrointestinal illness, including an upset stomach or a frequent need for a restroom. So "not recommended" isn't necessarily a petri dish, but anyone who is immunocompromised should pay close attention to beach advisories.

Tracking from last year suggests Emerson Bay and Crandalls Beach were the problem spots in 2025 (see pic of what an advisory looks like), but samples from midweek suggest we're OK so far in 2026.
