Cool event coming to Milton in a couple weeks. Be sure to stop by!

Milton Renaissance Foundation will host Caleb Mishue, head of the metal detecting team Lost Treasure Recovery, at the Museum of Milton, Saturday May 17 at 10:30 AM. Mishue will display some of the best items the team has recovered, and share any history related to the finds.

“A deep love for the people who came before us and started this great country” has motivated Mishue in the search for artifacts from the past. Speaking for the team, he shares, “Our passion for history comes alive with metal detecting. We study the land, do our homework, and with a lot of luck, we are able to sometimes hold history in our hands. Metal detecting is a hobby, yes, but it is an obsession of ours that reveals the history that came before us. We are privileged to be able to show and share the history we have discovered.”

The Museum of Milton is located at 169 Broad Street, Milton, NC. For more information, call or text 336-583-8203 or email [email protected]. The event is free; however donations are welcome.

Cemetery Restoration Techniques Workshop to be hosted in Milton

Milton Renaissance Foundation will present a workshop featuring best practices for headstone and marble cleaning, repair and re-setting on Saturday, May 24, from 9 AM until noon. Ivan Nielson of Danville, VA will demonstrate the work, allowing attendees to participate and practice. A donation of $25 is suggested to cover the cost of supplies.

The event will begin at 11928 Academy Street, Milton, NC, at the Jean Bradsher Scott Renaissance Center, the church at the stoplight. Participants will then move to Cedars Cemetery for demonstrations and hands-on learning. Parking is limited at the front of the church site, but additional parking may be found on the right side of Fairview Street, and Downtown Milton. A golf cart shuttle will be available to assist. Chairs will also be available at the cemetery site.

Instructor Ivan Nielsen, a native of Denmark, has now spent more than half his life in the United States. Having lived in Southside Virginia for 29 years, he has used his degree in woodcutting technology in making furniture and other wood products in his professional life.
An avid history buff, Nielsen has performed extensive genealogy research using physical sources such as courthouse documents and family bibles, as well as online sources such as the Library of Virginia, Ancestry, Newspapers, Familysearch and Fold3. Locating unmarked burial sites assisted by cemetery records and Ground Penetrating Radar have been important aspects in his work. Locating unmarked graves of veterans has been particularly rewarding.
In case of rain, the event will be rescheduled at a later date.

For more information, call or text 336-583-8203 or email [email protected].

Gray or shine, the hunt was ON Saturday night. ☘️ The 3rd Annual St. Patrick’s Day scavenger hunt, (which started at 5pm at the Milton 66), led adventurers through town in search of a bedazzled treasure, uncovering hidden town history along the way. After an exciting chase, a lucky winner was crowned in Rhona just 1 hour and 15 minutes later! 🍀🏆 Thanks to all who participated! Who’s ready for next year? 😏

We had such a great time celebrating Christmas in Milton on Saturday night. With temps dipping below freezing, dozens of residents and people from nearby towns descended to our little town to meet Santa/Mrs Clause, walk the lighted trail, listen to live music, shop at the Night Market, and dine in our local restaurants and beer garden. Thanks to all who put this annual event on and celebrated with us!

We recently sat down with Ashley Allen, owner of All in The Family Grill and Mini Mart (she’s also the store’s “dessert queen”), and asked her a bit about how the business came to be, and why she likes running it alongside her fellow family members including:

•Jessica (Ashley’s mother) “Cooking Queen”
•Eva (grandmother) “Cornbread Queen”
•Brian (uncle) “Fish King”
•Kevin (dad) “Chicken King”
•Jasmine (cousin) “Queen Greeter/Cashier”
•Leslie (god mother) “Lemonade queen”
•Tanya - (aunt) “Greens Queen”

According to her recent Facebook post:
“I brought this vision to my mother, father and my uncle B in 2022 with, “Let’s open up a restaurant!.” They did NOT take me serious at all, but they agreed to it. I started taking business classes, having meetings with the SBA, and speaking with banks to find the best banking for our business. Every week I was coming back with new information, and showing them I was serious. I finally got approved for EVERYTHING that’s when they saw how serious I was !. So here I am at 33 with my first business along with my family’s help !. I could not be more proud of us!”

About the business:

Description: Soul Cooked Food with Love

**Here is our interview with Ashley:**

Q: What do you do at the restaurant?
I do inventory, handle the banking, financial things, I come in and cook, I do the desserts, I run the register, I fix plates.

Q: How did you decide on the type of cuisine you wanted to serve at All in the Family?
On this little strip in Milton there is no home cooked food, reasonable priced. My Mom, Grandma and Aunt love cooking southern meals, and all different types of country food. People enjoy the southern food. They get tired of having the fast foods, they prefer a home cooked meal.

Q: What makes your menu unique, and are there any signature dishes you’d recommend?
Because it’s cooked with love, it’s prepared fresh, our chefs are taking their time not rushing it out.

Q: What are your personal favorite menu items?
The fish, hamburger and gravy, meatloaf, collard greens, homemade macaroni and cheese, spaghetti and cornbread.

Q: What values or principles do you prioritize in your restaurant’s culture?
We welcome all people, we don’t discriminate, and we don’t turn anyone away.

Q: How do you source ingredients, and are there any local farms or vendors you work with?
Sysco is our main source. Also, some local farmers bring fresh vegetables in, and we go to markets to get fresh vegetables, and of course local grocery stores.

Q: What’s been the biggest challenge so far in launching and running this restaurant?
Having enough food. Just so you have enough during the rush and don’t run out.

Q: How would you describe the overall atmosphere you aim to create for your guests?
It’s a friendly, family atmosphere, it’s welcoming - we walk around and talk to the customers. Come as you are.

Q: What’s the most surprising lesson you’ve learned on this business journey so far?
The support, for real! The town is so small and we were nervous, but business has been booming, We love the support of the locals and people nearby. We have new customers every day.

Q: What is the customer’s favorite item?
For breakfast: Bacon and egg and cheese on toast, and fatback, simoncakes
For lunch/dinner: Fried chicken, Hamburger and gravy, Meatloaf, Spaghetti

Q: I know this may sound like an obvious question, but how did you get the name?
All of us are family and so we wanted to do something that represented that. There is eight of us. And we are all born and raised here in Milton.

Q: What do like best about running the restaurant?
Meeting new people. We meet people from all over, which is amazing. When the VIR did a recent big race, we even met someone from California.
