History of Funeral Traditions to be presented in Milton

Jarred Marlowe, of Collinsville, Virginia, will present a History of Funeral Traditions at the Jean Bradsher Scott Renaissance Center. The event is hosted the Milton Renaissance Foundation.

Marlowe’s presentation promises to guide audiences through a captivating tour of how humanity has honored the dead — from ancient mummification and early American burial practices to the rise of embalming, hearses, cremation, and today’s funeral homes. Along the way, the program will address curiosities such as the real difference between a coffin and a casket, why cemeteries and graveyards aren’t the same, and how funeral customs around the world — and in America — have changed over time.

Jarred Marlowe is a historian and speaker who presents engaging programs on American history, cultural traditions, and remembrance, with a special focus on the Civil War era and local/area history. A native of Danville, VA and a graduate of the Virginia Military Institute, he currently lives in Collinsville with his wife, Meghan, and their two children. Through research-driven storytelling, Jarred connects local and national history to modern audiences in meaningful and accessible ways.

The Jean Bradsher Scott Renaissance Center is located at 11928 Academy Street, Milton NC. Some parking is available along the right side of Fairview Street, which is across the street from the venue, and more parking further down Broad Street; however, exercise care to not block driveways. For more information, or if you will need assistance in navigating parking, email [email protected] or call/text 336-583-8203.
