Metro Midwifery’s MN Black Homebirth initiative is changing birth for Black families in Minnesota, where hospital birth is not often the safest option for low risk pregnancy.

This month we will focus on Black birth and Black History.

Meet Kaytee Crawford of Doula Kaytee - Certified Perinatal Educator and Ahava Creative Co.

I have so much to say about Kaytee. She is one of Birth & Soul’s back up doulas, who has snuggled many Birth & Soul babies overnight with rave reviews.

Kaytee is a birth and postpartum doula, perinatal educator, certified babywearing educator as well as perusing her lactation educator certification.

Kaytee is also the artist behind Ahava Creative Co. Her designs highlight affirmations and beauty, and she has authored several coloring books. She also makes custom affirmations, which are an amazing tool for Birth and Pregnancy.

Kaytee’s expertise in babywearing is top notch, and a one on one lesson will have you feeling confident in wearing your baby or babies.

Our clients love her and so do we.

We will be using this space this month to highlight Black birthworkers, community organizations and spaces. These folks have been leading the way for long before the world took notice.

While Birth & Soul strives to provide culturally competent care to all families, we know that for some families their best birth comes from having support that truly understands the Black experience, and that is because they, themselves are Black.

So, please meet some of the amazing folks we have in Minnesota!

Not only is there a racial disparity and violence in our nation, we are long time advocates of the need for change in the maternal and infant health disparities for Black birthing families.
Disparities in health are an every day occurrence, obstetrical violence, and higher maternal and infant mortality rates in the Black community are an ugly, hidden side of a history of violence against Black bodies.
Birth & Soul is committed to an anti-racist practice, referrals to culturally competent care and ongoing support of SAFE care for all bodies.

Many of my past clients have chose hypnobirthing to prepare for childbirth. I can’t think of a better way to prepare for birth in the current crisis. With so much unknown, this is an exceptional tool.

It’s a strange time. Many pregnant people are feeling the squeeze. The tightness in their chest. The tension in their shoulders. Answers seem less clear.
💕
What I can tell you is that current and future Hypnobirthing classes at Flutterby will not be left without the resources and personalized care they sought when they registered for my class. We may be seeing one another through the wonders of technology, but the true connection and quality of education will not falter.
💕
So, take a deep, cleaning breath. Release those shoulders. Expand your chest. Come to a class where our primary focus is calm and relaxation. Where you learn all about the physiological AND psychological aspects of birth. Where you receive guidance in having a confident birth, regardless of how it all may unfold.
💕
Thank you to those sticking by my small business and to all who have and continue to refer their friends/family/clients/patients. We will come out of this stronger and more confident. All of us.
😌
Registration is open for all upcoming classes at www.flutterbybirth.com

Emotional and mental health is an important part of our parenting journey.

I’m open about my own struggles with postpartum anxiety after the birth of my second child.

This is a way you can support a new or struggling parent. This is a gift from my sister at the time. A journal, with an inscription that I’ve read so many times.

People often don’t know what to do or how to help.

Here is a way.

“Doulas — birth coaches whose services often extend from before birth to well after — are usually not covered by health insurance. The physical, emotional and educational support they provide are not considered medical care, even though a growing body of evidence finds they improve birth outcomes.

The costs of using or becoming a doula mean that doula care has come to be seen as a choice made mainly by "white upper middle class women," according to the journal Health Affairs.”

Advocates say Medicaid coverage for doulas could help reduce the huge health gaps between black and white mothers, and provide more doula care for lower-income women who need it most but can't afford to pay for it.
