MCAD FACULTY UNION SOLIDARITY STATEMENT on Wage Increases & Economic Support!

Dear Administration:
The ongoing sustainability of MCAD— an institution dedicated to supporting creative inquiry and social change — requires a commitment from all involved to a cause larger than ourselves: a commitment that day by day and year by year is embodied by holistic and interconnected systems of support between all faculty, students, and staff.
As faculty within MCAD, ours is not a passive role, taken as a matter of course, but one with active stakes and intentional investments of our time, our care and our labor. We have proactively made these decisions, and we are proud to align ourselves with a vision, as stated by MCAD’s current administration, seeking to “collaboratively transform society through equity, empathy, and imagination.”
And it is now through these same guiding principles — equity, empathy, imagination and embodied community support — that we advocate for ourselves and our colleagues.
The “community of support” we seek to provide for our students, and that MCAD promises them, is only as possible as how we ourselves are supported in turn. And, at a time when spiraling costs of living show no sign of decreasing, at an institution with regularly fewer than 35 full time professors, that has a teaching body consistently made up of roughly 80% adjunct labor in recent years – many of whom, full time and adjunct alike, have steadfastly endured the extreme challenges and strains of teaching in the wake of COVID – and a changing and growing student body that deserves our attention and engage-ment, we believe it to be critical that

WE, THE UNDERSIGNED BELOW — ARTISTS, PARENTS, RENTERS, MENTORS, CAREGIVERS, GLOBAL CITIZENS, WORKERS; IN A WORD, FACULTY — BELIEVE THAT IN ORDER TO CONTINUE FULLY PROVIDING THE EXPERI-ENCES ALL MEMBERS OF OUR MCAD COMMUNITY DESERVE, TO SUSTAINABLY CONTRIBUTE TO THE TRANSFORMATIVE EDUCATIONS AND THE INTERSECTIONAL SUPPORT NAMED WITHIN OUR INSTITUTION’S MISSION STATEMENT, WE MUST BE GRANTED THE CURRENT WAGE SUPPORT PROPOSED BY OUR FACULTY UNION MEMBERSHIP.

Great news for international students in the United States.

The Department of Homeland Security and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement have agreed to rescind a policy that would bar international students taking online-only courses from residing in the United States, federal judge Allison D. Burroughs announced at a hearing on Tuesday.

Thank a unionist for the fact that children don’t work down in the mines, for overtime laws, the eight-hour day and the 40-hour week, workplace safety, health insurance, paid vacations and the possibility of a retirement lived in dignity. But also consider the help American workers could still use today.

As Frederick Douglass said: “Power concedes nothing without a demand. It never did and it never will.”
