On October 4, 1869, a tunnel that was being built underneath the Saint Anthony Falls collapsed. This created a sinkhole in the river so bad that the falls were in danger of collapsing, which meant the Hydropower plants would also be in danger too. The next day a plan was hatched to plug the sinkhole by throwing in as much big material as could fit (the piano was only a rumor, but it's fun to imagine). However, shortly after Mother Nature would have the last laugh as all that effort was destroyed by the powerful water immediately. After weeks of work day and night, the water was diverted as a temporary solution. It wouldn't be until much later when the United States Army Corps of Engineers built concrete aprons to stabilize the waterfall.
