Destin Launches Beach Basket Pilot Program in partnership with Trees on the Coast

Danny Kushion, a member of the parks and recreation staff, installed baskets at June White Decker and the Shore at Crystal Beach. Beach patrons will now be able to "borrow" a basket and help collect trash as they walk along the beach and return it for the next person to use. This idea was brought before the Destin City Council by Bobby Wagner with Trees on the Coast.

Great Advice for the Season!

The beaches are crowded, more than I have seen in 30 years of coming here. So we might be a bit closer than normal.

1. We all love Chris Stapleton but that’s why God created Earbuds (okay Steve Jobs but let’s not argue). Pop those suckers in so we can hear the ocean.

2. Holes. Loved the movie hate them at the beach. When the day is done and you remember where you buried Little Johnny, fill in the hole. It impedes nesting sea turtles and can cause someone to break a leg on an evening stroll.

3. Smokers. Third row please so we don’t have to suck on your cig smoke. Pick up your butts (the ones you smoked).

4. Don’t feed the seagulls. Nasty critters and they will p**p on you.

5. Stay the heck off the dunes where marked (unless getting to your beach front rental) we need them to protect the beach.

6. No glass on the beach. Bring your Yeti with aluminum cans or boxed wine.

7. Dog tags. If your doggie doesn’t have a tag and you are caught in the beach, I think it’s like $500 fine. Only property owners can get a tag. Can only be on the beach before 8:30 am and after 3:30 pm.

8. Clean up after your fireworks. Oh and on that subject, we know you spent a lot of money to rent here but we need to keep the beaches the way you like them. Also, any firework that goes up in the air is illegal here (confession of reformed pyro).

9. If you have a bonfire permit DO NOT dump the ashes in the ocean or on the beach. Leave no trace like good Scouts.

10. Slow down on 30-A. Hell folks you are
here already. Chill and respect those crossing the street.

11. Have a great time and remember to tip your wait staff generously.
