Spent a few days with Sam exploring more of Moab. No shortage of hikes and scenery, and dear Lord, the crazy wind! ⛰ For the next few months he’s living in a house rather than the van he’s been in for the last year. So I stayed in my van in his driveway, he graciously slept on the couch so his pregnant sister could have the bed 😴

Piestewa Peak Trail. Yes, it took me that long to hike just over a mile. There were plenty of people running this trail…like it’s their after work activity. The Phoenix Mountains Preserve is right in the middle of suburbia, convenient for an after work hike. The views are 👍🏻

Years ago when visiting Utah we drove out to Muley Point and were blown away by the magic of the place and said we would be back to camp one day. We finally got to! It’s probably the most surreal place I’ve visited…views like crazy. You can see the back of Monument Valley, Navajo Mountain, Valley of the Gods, Goosenecks State Park and the San Juan River. Muley Point is at the end of Cedar Mesa and is made of many huge boulders which drop down 1000 feet below. If you zoom in on the last pic you can see where we camped, next to the white speck of a van you see in the pic. The drive to get here was almost as cool…you wind up the Mesa on the Moki Dugway, a few miles of dirt switchbacks with 10% grades. It’s fascinating. Google and read about Muley Point and Moki Dugway. You’ll find much better pics and some interesting info. 10/10 recommend camping here!!

Still don’t have a van routine down yet. I’m loving it and having fun, but I still feel very disorganized as to where things should be stored etc. Still working out lots of kinks like that. It was compounded the last few nights with Mitch sleeping in the van too 🤣 If we were doing van life we’d be making lots of changes, but in reality this is just van travel and doesn’t have to be perfect. Honestly, I feel so grateful I GET to travel around like this.

The past several days I’ve been soaking up time with Sam (he came to Claudia’s for a few days) and Claudia. Mitch flew out a couple days ago to see the kids. We got to Moab today to camp with Sam. More on all that later….the sights are amazing!

On the way back to AZ from CA I hopped off the interstates to explore. Anza-Borrego Desert State Park has breathtakingly tall mountains that end in a flat valley which gives way to sand dunes for miles. I didn’t get pics of the Imperial Valley area. The landscape starts to change and become very agricultural. Lots of irrigation canals. Some larger towns appeared, such as El Centro, which is very close to the Mexico border. I’d love to go back and spend time discovering all the towns around there some day.

I was able to drive to the coast to spend a couple of days with Kendall and Daniel at their home for the month. Balboa Island is super cool, not what I expected. They showed me Laguna Beach and Malibu. Such different beaches than we have on the east coast. I loved the contrast of the brown desert mountains and how they ended right in the sea. Crazy beautiful!
