We hope to see you tonight, May 7th, at 6 pm at the Moab Information Center for a great lecture from John Weisheit!

Join us at the Moab Information Center for an evening of geology, history, and discovery!

May 7 | Grove K. Gilbert by John Weisheit

Grove K. Gilbert (1843–1918) was a foundational American geologist and a true giant of geomorphology who transformed how we understand landscape evolution, erosion, and sedimentation. His work spanned planetary geology and atmospheric science, and his contributions helped shape the language we still use to describe geologic features today. Gilbert also established the first hydrology laboratory at Berkeley and played a key role in the early years of the U.S. Geological Survey.

Join us to explore the legacy of one of geology’s most influential minds and how his work continues to shape the landscapes we see today.

UPDATE: After meeting with the construction team this morning, we have decided to reopen campsites 1-10 at Grandstaff Campground!

Planning a Moab trip? Heads up, Grandstaff Campground on River Road (SR-128) will be closed starting March 9 through the end of October.

This closure will provide a safe staging area for construction equipment being used for an exciting new project! The popular paved bike path along the road is being extended an additional half mile, all the way to Grandstaff Canyon, which will create a much safer exit for cyclist completing the popular mountain bike trail, The Whole Enchilada. This will also provide better access to the Grandstaff Canyon hiking trail.

Access to Grandstaff Canyon Trailhead and the Porcupine Rim parking area will remain open, as will access to the vault toilet nearby. Visitors should plan for time delays during construction. The project will reduce SR-128 to one lane, with traffic control beginning March 9, through the end of October. Thank you UDOT and partners for seeing this project across the finish line!

Visiting national parks doesn’t always require an entrance fee. Every year, the National Park Service designates several fee-free days, when entrance fees are waived at national parks across the country.

These days are a great opportunity to explore new places, revisit favorite parks, or introduce someone to public lands for the first time. While entrance fees are waived, all other park rules still apply, and popular parks may be busier than usual. Planning ahead is always a good idea!

February 16: Presidents Day (Washington's Birthday)
May 25: Memorial Day
June 14: Flag Day/President Trump's birthday
July 3–5: Independence Day weekend
August 25: 110th Birthday of the National Park Service
September 17: Constitution Day
October 27: Theodore Roosevelt's birthday
