Great read!
Dear Mobile Mardi Gras,
I just wanted to write you to thank for the great time you've given America over the last few weeks.
I have to tell you- when you throw a party, you really throw a party!
I wanted to let you know that despite you feeling at times like a second banana, you are number one in my heart.
After all, you are the birthplace of American Mardi Gras- you were founded way back in 1703 by French settlers- and no, I wasn't there.
Down through the years, some have thought of you as Jan to New Orlean's Marsha.
"New Orleans, New Orleans, New Orleans," they have yelled.
Full disclosure: While Marsha sure was cute, I've always admired Jan- and like Jan, you have been honest and humble and hardworking. You have always brought out the best in people.
Today is Fat Tuesday, so I know you have come to the final day of Mardi Gras in Mobile.
Yet, even today you are staying busy throwing 6 parades and parties galore, just in time for Ash Wednesday.
There is a lot to love about you, Mobile Mardi Gras.
We love the Mobile Carnival Museum.
We love your king cakes and fried oysters.
We love your throw cups and beads and doubloons and necklaces.
We love your colors purple and gold.
We love your toys and Frisbees and whistles.
We love your Moon Pies- I bet Coach Saban loves your Moon Pies- he's a Little Debbie's guy, but I'm betting he would love to chow down on a few Moon Pies.
I know you are slammed as you wind things down, Mobile Mardi Gras.
Be proud and hold your head high today (remember- Mobile used to be the capital of Louisiana).
You've done a great job hosting over a million visitors.
You've done a great job reminding the world how wonderful the state of Alabama can be.
As you move forward in 2025, don't get all caught up in that "Marsha, Marsha, Marsha" stuff.
Remember that being Jan is just fine with us.
Because Jan might just be number one in our hearts.
Sincerely,
Rick Karle
